KINSTON -- Southern Wayne started strong but faded in the second half of a 35-12 defeat at Kinston High School on Friday night.
JaQuan Cobb got the Saints on the board in the first quarter with a three-yard touchdown run. Kinston immediately answered with a pair of touchdowns on the teams following two possessions.
Cobb pulled the Saints within one point in the second quarter with a two-yard scoring plunge that made the score 13-12 in Kinston's favor. The momentum was swung back in the home team's direction seconds later when Shasheed Swinson ran the kickoff back 92 yards for a touchdown.
"That was a huge play in the game because we had moved the ball really well and punched it in with a nice run," Southern Wayne assistant coach David Lee said. "It was deflating to have the kickoff taken all the way back."
Cobb paced the Saints with 89 yards on the ground. Quintae Bradshaw added 43 yards on the ground. Southern Wayne did not complete a pass for the second consecutive week.
The Saints (0-4 overall) will travel to Louisburg on Friday night.
