Hunt outlasts CBA spikers

PIKEVILLE -- A slow start doomed Charles B. Aycock on Wednesday night.
Former conference rival Wilson Hunt capitalized on the Golden Falcons' sluggish beginning and claimed a 25-14, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16 non-conference, volleyball win.
Unforced errors helped the Warriors grab a 15-5 lead in the opening set. Linzie Maddon established her front-line presence with three consecutive kills to put the set away.
"We played yesterday and I was a little concerned about our legs going into tonight," said C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris. "We did come out slow and we got behind too far to come back in the first set."
The home team came storming back in the second set.
Trailing 22-17, the Golden Falcons earned the serve when Connor Davis belted a kill just inside the end line. Two consecutive unforced errors by the Warriors got the Golden Falcons back in contention. Aycock's Madison Mercer kept the momentum with back-to-back kills.
"I think that we came back and played well in the second set gave us an opportunity to kind of catch our breath," said Harris. "Hunt has a good team and they bounced right back."
The Warriors jumped out to a 7-1 advantage and never looked back as they continually channeled the ball to Maddon, who rattle the hardwood with a series of powerful kills.
Maddon added five more kills during the decisive fourth set, and finished the night with 13 kills and five blocks.
Davis paced the Golden Falcons with seven kills and one block. Mercer added six kills.
C.B. Aycock (3-3 overall) entertains North Lenoir tonight.
