DUDLEY -- A barrage of second-quarter scoring ignited defending state 1-A champion Wallace-Rose Hill's 37-7, non-conference win over Southern Wayne on Friday night at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

The Bulldogs put 28 points on the board during the quarter, all on short rushing touchdowns.

"The first touchdown was set up by a bad punt snap that put them at our three-yard line," said Saints assistant coach David Lee. "A play like that is tough to overcome against a good team like (Wallace)."

Southern Wayne tried to get back into contention in the third quarter when Jaquan Cobb scored on a three-yard run. The cheering from the home crowd subsided in the fourth quarter when a Bulldog defender scooped up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for the game's final score.

Andrew Matthews led the Saints with 129 yards on the ground. Cobb added 53 yards on 18 carries. The Saints did not complete a pass in the game.

Southern Wayne (0-3 overall) travels to Kinston on Friday.
