Friday prep notebook: Pinkowski politics for Britt

Randy Pinkowski missed his calling as a politician.

The Charles B. Aycock head coach lobbied his support for third-year Rosewood head football coach Robert Britt on Friday evening.

"Hats off to Robert Britt," said Pinkowski after the Golden Falcons' 39-10 victory at Branch Pope Field. "Everybody here at Rosewood, I say you chip in, buy the man a new house here in town, a new car ... do anything you've got to do to keep him here. He's doing a whale of a job. He's preparing these kids physically to play the game and he's teaching them how to play the game.

"They were in the right spots tonight. They're very well-coached."

The Eagles (1-1 overall) recovered a Golden Falcons' fumble on the game's opening possession, and kept the visitors' offense baffled throughout the first half.

Aycock adjusted and scored on four of five second-half possessions.

"They need to stick with this guy because he's doing it the right way," said a smiling Pinkowski. "Now, maybe they need to fire that guy at Aycock. I don't know."

For the longest time

Second-year Rosewood quarterback Taylor McGill engineered a textbook drive during the second quarter Friday evening.

The junior orchestrated a 15-play, 56-yard march that exhausted eight minutes off the clock. The Eagles earned first downs on three of four third-down conversions, and didn't commit a penalty along the way.

The possession ended on a fourth-down incompletion at the Golden Falcon 39-yard line.

"I think, when we go back and look at the film, our kids will gain confidence from that drive," said RHS head coach Robert Britt. "This is a good thing and we're going in the right direction. There were some bright spots tonight."

Who's on 'D'?

Senior defensive end Jamie Wooten and junior linebacker Greg Cavenaugh, each a two-way starter for the Eagles, probably had no trouble sleeping Friday evening.

Wooten recorded nine solo tackles and one assist. Cavenaugh, playing with a broken left hand, added eight solo hits. Teammate T.J. Frost, a junior defensive end, provided five solo tackles and one assist.

Senior linebacker Mark Jones led Aycock with five tackles and three assists on defense. Austin Snowden supplied four solo stops and one assist. Teammates Shep Whitfield and Austin Willoughby recorded four tackles apiece.
