MOUNT OLIVE -- Then the rains came.
After an exciting first inning of an elimination game between Wayne North and West Johnston on Saturday the skies opened up and forced the game to be postponed until today at 12:30 p.m.
West Johnston opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning.
Jack Sherill ripped a double to lead off the inning and moved to third base on a single by Tyler Mashburn. Both base runners scored on a double off the bat of Justin Carroll.
Wayne North answered in the bottom of the stanza.
Jake May belted a single and advanced on a base hit from Nolan James. Wesley Capps loaded the bases with a single and Logan Wicks plated a run with a fielder's choice. Wesley Stewart capped the scoring with a two-run double.
As the Wayne North defense took the field for the top of the second inning the rain began to fall. The umpires directed everyone off the field moments later and subsequently postponed the game as the infield became saturated.
When the game resumes at Scarborough Field, Adam Morrison will be at the plate for West Johnston and Wicks will man the pitcher's mound for Wayne North.
The winner of the game will play again at 4 p.m.
In Wayne North's early game on Saturday the team had it's 14-game winning streak snapped with a 3-1 to the top seeded Cary Bulls. The win clinched a spot in the championship round.
Josh Dixon pitched a complete game for Wayne North, allowed just two earned runs, but took the hard-luck loss.
