Three of the Junior American Legion baseball teams that call Wayne County home have earned births in the annual East Regional tournament which begins on Friday.

Wayne South plays the opening game against West Johnston at 10 a.m. The tournament hosts hope to use the home field advantage to their favor as they battle through the double-elimination bracket.

Games are being played at both the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex and on campus at Mount Olive College. South is coming off a win over Snow Hill in its last outing and has amassed a 15-5 overall record on the season.

Central conference champion Wayne North is also in the bracket. Their opening round opponent is Edgecombe County at 10 a.m. on the Scarborough Field diamond. North is looking to extend a season-high 11 game winning streak on Friday.

After a long week of impressive baseball, C.B. Aycock earned an at-large bit to the tournament. Aycock carries a 16-4 record into the regional after finishing the season with a double-header split against Edgecombe County on Wednesday.

"I'm just excited for the gentlemen because we've had a lot of games jam-packed this summer," said Aycock head coach Nelson Cunningham. "It's hot out here and a lot of them haven't done that before being a young team. They stepped up and put us in the regional."

C.B. Aycock takes on Durham at noon on Friday at Scarborough Field.
