DUDLEY -- Wayne County South scored all of its runs in two innings, held off a late Snow Hill rally, and claimed an 11-8 victory at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Each team started hot at the plate.

Snow Hill seized a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Landon Elmore was hit by a pitch and advanced on an over throw by the pitcher. Ryan Cobb drew a walk and Trent Murray plated one run with a sacrifice fly. Deric Grant capped the inning with a two-run home run.

Wayne South immediately answered.

Taylor Raynor and Zach Grantham cranked out back-to-back singles. Taylor Brock added a base hit and Tyler Gainey plated a run with a fielder's choice. Keith Jones added an RBI single to round out the scoring.

"I thought we had some really good at-bats tonight," said Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee. "We battled back early, and we were able to break it open by making the most of a good scoring chance."

Wayne South tallied eight runs in the home half of the third inning.

Keith Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run and was followed by a two-run double by Will Raynor. Clayton Cashwell belted an RBI single and advanced when Grantham ripped a two-run single.

Brock and Tyler Gainey capped the rally with back-to-back RBI singles.

"Wayne South is a good-hitting team and they showed that tonight in one inning," said Snow Hill head coach Scott Jones. "I was proud of my guys though, because we could have called it a night and instead we kept hitting and tried to get back in it."

Snow Hill threatened in the top of the seventh.

With his team trailing 11-6, Ryder McLawhorn was hit by a pitch. Tucker Jones drew the same fate two batters later and Elmore plated both runners with a two-run base hit that brought the tying run to the on-deck circle.

Wayne South reliever Tyler Gainey settled down and retired the game's final batter without incident.

"Jamar (Holmes) did a good job keeping us in it for a few innings and Tyler was very solid," said McKee. "Snow Hill is known as a hitting team and I told our pitchers that they were not going to go away quietly."

Wayne South (12-4 overall) plays host to C.B. Aycock on Thursday. The same night that Snow Hill (7-6) travels to Wayne County North.
