PIKEVILLE -- Collin DuBose delivered the biggest blow of the game and C.B. Aycock outlasted Spring Creek 2-1 in Junior American Legion baseball action on Thursday night.

The visitors got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Austin Hinton stretched an opposite-field single into a double. Duane Gurganus belted an RBI base hit two batters later to give Spring Creek a 1-0 lead.

From that point, the game turned into a pitcher's duel between C.B. Aycock's Aaron Champion and Spring Creek's Hunter Barnett.

"I thought both starters were excellent tonight," said C.B. Aycock head coach Nelson Cunningham. "Aaron got in trouble early, but he really settled down and gave us some quality innings."

Aycock tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with one swing of DuBose's bat. The big-hitting, right-hander hammered a solo home run over the left field fence to start the inning. Cameron Taylor followed with a double and scored the go-ahead run on Josiah Laser's infield single.

The two teams combined for eight total hits.

"Hunter was excellent and really only gave up two hard hit balls the whole game," said Spring Creek head coach Heath Whitfield. "I told our guys after the game that I will take a well-playeda pitcher's duel any time."

The visitors had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Gurganus drew a walk and advanced when Zach Harrell reached on an error. A wild pitch from C.B. Aycock reliever Adam Pate allowed both runners to advance into scoring position. Pate settled down and struck out the final two batters of the game.

"That was a nice outing from Adam in the seventh," said Cunningham. "We didn't make a play behind him, and he stepped up and gutted it out for us for two more guys."

C.B. Aycock (7-1 overall) travels to South Johnston for a make-up game on Monday night, while Spring Creek (3-3) is the guest of Wayne County South.
