Wayne South bests rival Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- In a game that did not feature an earned run, Wayne South held off Spring Creek 5-4 in Junior American Legion baseball action on Friday night.

Wayne South did not waste any time getting it's offense in gear.

Taylor Raynor reached on an error and stole second before Tyler Gainey reached safely on a second Spring Creek miscue. Will Raynor followed with a two-run home run to left field that made the score 3-0 in the top of the first.

"We extended the first inning and took advantage of an infield mistake," Wayne South head coach Trae McKee said. "Raynor has been swinging the bat really well and he got a pitch to hit ahead in the count and he hit it hard."

Spring Creek (2-1 overall) battled back in the bottom of the second inning.

Chris Boseman was hit by a pitch and Austin Hinton dropped a bunt single that was misplayed and allowed Boseman to score. Corey Howell drew a walk and Duane Gurganus singled ahead of a two-run triple by Hunter Barnett.

"We had one big inning but other than that we had a lot of trouble hitting with men on base," Spring Creek head coach Heath Whitfield said. "We had other chances, but never came through."

Wayne South (6-1 overall) tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth inning when Ashton Cox scored on a passed ball. South took the lead in the sixth inning when Colton Christman plated Jamie Dove with a single.

Jamar Holmes was a big part of the Spring Creek offensive futility.

Holmes tossed four innings of scoreless relief en route to the mound win for Wayne South.

"Jamar went out there and gave us a good outing tonight," said McKee. "His breaking ball was working and he threw a lot of strikes."

Will Raynor worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.

Wayne South will host South Johnston on Tuesday night. The same evening Spring Creek takes on Wayne North.
