Wayne County North learned a hard lesson in the importance of fundamentals during its Junior American Legion contest Thursday evening.
Wayne County South capitalized on seven North errors, and claimed a 9-6 victory on the New Hope diamond.
Wayne South left a runner on third base in each of the first two innings.
Wayne North took a 1-0 lead on Jake May's RBI groundout in the bottom of the first. Justin Lee scored on an error in the home half of the second to extend the lead to 2-0.
Tyler Gainey's RBI single in the top of the third pulled Wayne South to within 2-1.
Wayne South used three hits and two Wayne North errors to take a 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Will Raynor scored on an error and Taylor Raynor's RBI single gave Wayne South a 3-2 advantage.
An error allowed both Taylor Raynor and Taylor Gainey to score. Taylor Raynor drew a bases-loaded walk, which increased the cushion to 6-2. Taylor Gainey and Taylor Rainey both finished with two hits.
"I was beginning to wonder if we were going to score," said Wayne South head coach Trae McKee. "We had a runner at second with nobody out in three consecutive innings, and we only scored one run. It's just a matter of a better approach and relaxing a bit more.
"We capitalized on some of their mistakes."
Jeremy Lancaster's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth cut the deficit to 6-3. Lancaster later scored on an error.
Wesley Stewart scored on an wild pitch in the home half of the fifth to pull Wayne North to within 6-5.
Keith Jones' RBI single and two more Wayne North errors accounted for three Wayne South runs in the top of the sixth inning. Wayne North's seven errors led to six unearned runs.
"There's three phases to the game and if you don't play all three phases you're not going to win," said Wayne North head coach Roger May. "You have to play them all consistently. We're not playing them consistently."
Nolan James' infield single in the bottom of the seventh scored Benito Avila. May and James both collected two hits.
Wayne County South (2-0 overall) entertains Rocky Mount tonight. Wayne County North (0-2) plays host to D.H. Conley in a doubleheader on Saturday.
