FOXFIRE VILLAGE -- Kyle Best emerged the Saints' low scorer with a two-day total of 176, and Southern Wayne ended up 12th in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A men's golf championships.
The 36-hole event concluded Tuesday.
Will Bunch contributed to the Saints' team score with a 181, followed by John Graham with a 187. Jeremiah Wright rounded out the four-player total with a 189.
Lance White and Kent Moore also participated for Southern Wayne.
Northern Guilford won the team state title with a 608, while Hickory's J.T. Posten emerged the individual state champion.
Gators finish 10th
SOUTHERN PINES -- Paul Sullivan carded a two-day score of 183 and Spring Creek ended up 10th overall in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A men's golf championships.
Jordan Edwards complemented Sullivan with a 184, while Kenneth Freeman fired a 185. Andrew Webber concluded the Gators' scoring with a 193.
Justin Casey and Daniel Richter also participated.
West Montgomery claimed the team championship, while Highland Tech's Greg Bunner picked up the individual state crown.
Eagles take fifth
SOUTHERN PINES -- Wayne Christian finished in fifth place at the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state championships on Tuesday at Mid-Pines Golf Course.
The Eagles shaved 12 strokes off their opening-day total of 362.
Davis Taylor, who earned all-state honors, led Wayne Christian with a 36-hole score of 155. Teammates Taylor Gardner (166), Nathan Taylor (190) and Bryson Tart also contributed to the Eagles' team score.
Trinity-Durham won the team state title.
Lane Tree LGA
Betty Jean Gurley captured first place and Susan Davis emerged the runner-up during President's Cup play on the Lane Tree Golf Club links.
In weekly competition, Barbara Hill picked up game-of-the-week accolades. Davis and Gurley seized low net and low putts, respectively.
Softball
EW, SW ousted
Eastern Wayne and Southern Wayne endured season-ending losses in the 2010 Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference softball tournament on Tuesday evening.
The Warriors lost 14-0 at South Johnston.
The Saints dropped an 8-4 decision at North Lenoir.
Semifinal-round play is today with South Johnston at Charles B. Aycock and North Lenoir at Triton. The winners meet Friday at the highest-remaining seed.
Rebels get forfeit
CALYPSO -- Playoff-bound North Duplin earned a 7-0 forfeit over Goldsboro in the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Tuesday evening.
The playoff-bound Rebels (7-9 overall) finished third in the league.
