WILSON -- Wayne Country Day's Michael Knutson earned co-player-of-the-year honors and the Chargers finished third overall in the season-ending, Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference tournament.
Knutson and partner Thomas Elmore emerged the CPIC champions at the No. 1 doubles flight. The duo received all-CPIC accolades, along with teammate Jack Langston.
Langston emerged the runner-up in the No. 3 singles flight. Douglas Williams, an all-CPIC honorable mention selection, played strong at No. 4 singles.
Wayne Country Day returns to action Friday in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament at Barton College.
Softball
WCS falls on road
FAYETTEVILLE -- C.C. Drew crushed a three-run home run, and two-time defending state champion Cape Fear Christian defeated Wayne Christian 4-0 for the Carolina Christian 1-A softball tournament title.
Wayne Christian right-hander Rachel McCollum held CFCA scoreless through three innings. Olivia Scarborough, who earned all-state accolades last season, scored the game's first run on Callie Taylor's fourth-inning single.
McCollum surrendered four earned runs on seven hits and fanned eight CFCA batters.
Scarborough held Wayne Christian to four hits and recorded 12 strikeouts inside the pitcher's circle. Sarah McCollum, who signed with Wake Tech Community College, batted 2-for-3. Teammates Regan Hinton and Courtney Barrow added one hit apiece.
The Eagles (9-5 overall) return to action Tuesday afternoon at Hobgood Academy in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs.
The first round is single elimination. The final four, which will be double elimination, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Buies Creek.
