Golden Falcons shut out Saints

WINTERVILLE -- Southern Wayne did a good job of avoiding big innings during the first two games of the inaugural Winterville Baseball Bash.

The Saints weren't as fortunate Tuesday evening.

County rival Charles B. Aycock used a 12-run fourth inning to break open its 15-0 win and claim the tournament crown.

"We had three good days of swinging the bats and we were able to build some momentum that hopefully we can carry forward," said C.B. Aycock head coach Charles Davis said. "South Central and D.H. Conley host a great tournament and we really enjoyed it."

Leading 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Golden Falcons went to work at the plate. Catcher Nicholas McGee led off with a walk and was followed by a single from Jeff Carmel. Travis Musselman tallied a sacrifice fly that plated McGee.

Then the flood gates opened.

Tyler Farmer, Connor Narron and Adron Hollowell drew consecutive walks. Tyler Ruffin reached on an error that plated two runs and Jordan Quinn followed with a single. Two more walks, a pair of singles and a three-run home run by Narron capped the 12-run outburst.

The Golden Falcons (15-1 overall) sent 18 men to the plate in the inning and eventually left the bases loaded.

The cushion was more than enough for Eric DuBose, who tossed a five-inning complete game and struck out four in the shutout.

"I thought that was a big key all three days ... starting pitching," said Davis. "Each guy that we sent out there gave us a chance to win and that led to our hitters being aggressive and having more confidence."

Jonathan Taylor was named the tournament most valuable player. Narron, DuBose, Ruffin and Carmel were each selected to the all-tournament team.

Cody Davis, Zach Grantham, Taylor Brock and Will Broadwell were the all-tournament picks from Southern Wayne (8-7).

"You have to take the positive out of this week and move on," said Saints head coach Trae McKee. "We beat two good teams to get to the finals and those games have to be the ones we try to build on."

The two teams meet again Tuesday when Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play resumes. First pitch is 7 p.m. on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex diamond.
