C.B. Aycock nips Triton

PIKEVILLE -- Having left eight runners on base through six innings, Charles B. Aycock made sure it didn't strand a runner when it mattered most.

Adron Hollowell scored on Tyler Ruffin's infield single and a Triton throwing error in the bottom of the seventh, lifting the Golden Falcons to a 3-2 win in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play on Thursday evening.

Hollowell led off the home of the seventh inning with a single to right field. He later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hollowell raced home on Ruffin's infield single and a Hawks' error.

"The last inning we kind of took the approach to take the ball the other way," said Aycock head coach Charles Davis. "They helped us out by throwing a wild pitch there. With Ruffin, he was going to bunt and then he got two strikes on him. He did what he was supposed to do with two strikes trying to hit the ball the other way.

"He put the ball in play and made things happen."

Triton tied the game at 2-2 on Louie Decarolis' sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth. The Hawks had the go-ahead run at first base with just one out, but Hollowell, on in relief of Eric DuBose, recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

Trailing 1-0, the Golden Falcons scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on Jeff Carmel's sacrifice fly and Tyler Farmer's RBI infield single.

Triton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Aaron Deserres' RBI groundout.

Of the eight runners Aycock left on base, seven were stranded in the first four innings. The Golden Falcons (12-1 overall, 4-0 ECC) left the bases loaded in the second inning, and stranded a pair of runners in both the third and fourth innings.

Aycock left five runners in scoring position for the game.

"The thing that concerns me the most is we left eight runners on base," said Davis. "That's 19 runners we've left on base in the last two ball games. We've got to take better approaches at the plate with men in scoring position. I don't know if we're trying to do too much or what.

"I think a lot of times it's processing it before you go up there."

DuBose allowed two earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work. He left with runners on the corners and no outs in the top of the sixth inning.

Hollowell tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit while striking out three with no walks.

"I thought Eric DuBose threw a great ball game for us tonight," said Davis. "Adron came in and did a great job. This conference is going to be like this game in and game out. We're fortunate to come away with a win."

The Golden Falcons face D.H. Conley on Saturday at South Central High School in the South Central/D.H. Conley Easter Invitational.
