Wachovia Cup: Aycock grabs slim one-point lead in ECC; Princeton is top Dawg

CHAPEL HILL -- Charles B. Aycock has taken a slim one-point lead in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Wachovia Conference Cup race after a tremendous winter sports season.
The Golden Falcons won their first regular-season championship in men's basketball since 1995, and emerged the top performers in women's swimming and wrestling. Aycock leads league newcomer Triton, 53.5-52.5.
Triton claimed the women's regular-season title in basketball, and collected second-place finishes in men's swimming and wrestling.
Eastern Wayne is third with 46.5 points after seizing the men's swimming championship and taking second in women's swimming.
Rounding out the conference is South Johnston with 42 points, followed by Southern Wayne (31) and North Lenoir (16.5).
Carolina 1-A
Princeton recorded the men's indoor track crown and leads archrival Rosewood 34-33 in the Carolina 1-A Wachovia Cup chase.
The Dogs finished third in men's basketball, while the Eagles emerged the Carolina/4 Rivers regular-season champions in wrestling.
Ayden-Grifton is third with 30 points after runner-up finishes in men's and women's basketball. Goldsboro, which won the men's and women's basketball regular-season titles, is fourth with 27 points.
Spring Creek and North Duplin have 23 and 19 points, respectively.
Tri-County 1-A
Pender won the men's and women's regular-season basketball championships and leads Union 41-32.5 in the Tri-County 1-A Wachovia Cup competition.
Hobbton is third with 28 points. James Kenan has 27.5, followed by Heide Trask (25.5), Lakewood (23) and Midway (20).
The Wachovia Conference Cup, formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy, is a companion to the Wachovia Cup. The Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each individual conference.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
