MOUNT OLIVE -- Caroline Newman induced a game-ending flyout with the bases juiced, and UNC Pembroke escaped Mount Olive College, 11-9, in eight innings during game one of their softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon.
The Braves took the nightcap, 8-4.
The Trojans (11-21 overall) blew a five-run advantage in the opener.
Pembroke tied the game at 9-9 with a five-run, seven-inning outburst. Jelena Shaw and Holly Berry pounded out RBI doubles in the eighth inning to put the visitors ahead.
MOC had runners at second and third with two outs when Newman got the flyout to seal the comeback. Kristin Ware (4-4) was the hard-luck loser in the pitcher's circle for the Trojans.
Former Rosewood standout Courtney Hill and Berry sparked UNCP in game two. Hill stroked a two-out double and Berry swatted a two-run homer as the Braves raced to a 7-0 lead through 31/2 innings.
The Trojans avoided the shutout on Anna Munizza's RBI single. Kelly Minshew, who is 12 for 12 in stolen bases this season, scored on Olivia Popkin's RBI single in the fifth inning. Minshew delivered a two-run double in the sixth.
MOC continues play at home Saturday and Sunday.
