Golden Falcons throttle Knights

PIKEVILLE -- Two down and one to go.

Playing the second of three games in three days, Charles B. Aycock took another step toward completing an early-season test. The Golden Falcons erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and defeated Northern Nash 12-1 in 41/2 innings on Thursday afternoon.

The Knights threatened with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the first inning. Aycock hurler Aaron Champion struck out Madison Mayo and picked Jeremy Lucas off third base to end the inning.

"I thought the biggest thing was in the top of the first when they had the bases loaded with one out," said Golden Falcons head coach Charles Davis. "We got a strikeout and then a big pick-off. That right there was the key."

Jordan Quinn's RBI double got Aycock's scoring started in the home half of the first. Adron Hollowell scored on an error and Jeff Carmel's two-run double gave the Golden Falcons a 4-0 edge.

Travis Musselman followed Carmel with a two-run single and Connor Narron completed the outburst with a three-run home run.

"I thought we were aggressive at the plate and then I thought we had some good at-bats in that situation," said Davis. "When you put nine on the board in the first inning against a pretty darn good team you've got to feel good about it. The thing I liked about it is we didn't seem to lose our focus."

Narron had an RBI double in the bottom of the third and he later scored on a wild pitch.

Lucas' RBI single in the top of the fourth accounted for Northern Nash's lone run.

Narron's RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth put Aycock in front 12-1. Narron finished 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBI. Hollowell (RBI) and Quinn both had two hits.

Champion earned the win on the mound, allowing one earned run on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks over four innings of work.

The Golden Falcons complete their three games in three days stretch today at Rosewood. Aycock defeated the Eagles 3-2 on March 8 in Pikeville.

"The first week of the season we played Thursday, Friday and Saturday," said Davis. "We've got the chance tomorrow to go to Rosewood. It was a very good baseball game the first time we played them. We were fortunate.

"There's no doubt about it they outplayed us the first time. Hopefully, we'll go over there tomorrow a little more focused and see if we can close out the week with a win."
