MOC baseball sweeps twinbill

MOUNT OLIVE - Getting the season off to a good start at home while generating momentum was a point of emphasis for Mount Olive this season.

The Trojans have done just that.

Mount Olive's high-powered offense continues to light up the scoreboard as the Trojans swept a doubleheader 21-2 and 6-0 from Shippensburg on Saturday at Scarborough Field.

Game one marked the ninth time this season Mount Olive (13-0) has scored in double digits. The Trojans have outscored their opponents 180-30.

"There were so many unanswered questions early," said Mount Olive head coach Carl Lancaster. "These guys are starting to play with confidence now and we feel like we can win any game."

Jeremy Nowak's RBI single to left scored Bobby Leeper to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game one. Nowak later scored on a double-steal.

Ryan Faison's sacrifice bunt scored Daniel Coffey in the home half of the second to increase the lead to 3-0. Leeper added a two-run homer to left to give Mount Olive a 5-0 cushion.

The Raiders got on the board in the top of the third with Kris Kullman's RBI double to center field.

The Trojans tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jesse Lancaster provided an RBI single to center. Jeremy Nowak's RBI groundout scored Faison and Mike Knox smashed a two-run homer to left field.

Cody Kulp's RBI groundout cut the deficit to 9-2 in the top of the fifth.

Tyler Smith trotted home on a wild pitch in the home half of the fifth increasing Mount Olive's lead to 10-2. Leeper followed with an RBI double to left making the score 11-2. Nowak's RBI single extended the Trojans' advantage to 12-2.

Knox's sac-fly gave Mount Olive a 13-2 lead. Dan Hayduk followed Knox with a run-scoring triple. Airlon Vinson continued the onslaught with an RBI groundout and the Trojans led 15-2 after five innings. Nolan Lancaster added an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh giving Mount Olive a 16-2 advantage.

The Trojans pushed across six more runs in the home half of the seventh highlighted by Coffey's three-run homer.

Sean Lyndon got the win on the mound in game one allowing two earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Topher Ellis' two-run single to right field gave Mount Olive a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game two.

Nowak added an RBI single in the home half of the third.

Faison and Leeper both had RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth extending the Trojans' lead to 5-0.

Faison's single to right in the bottom of the sixth plated Coffey pushing the margin to 6-0.

North Lenoir product Carter Capps earned the win in game two pitching a complete game shutout allowing just two hits while striking out five and walking two.

"I felt like we got two pretty good pitching performances," said Lancaster. "Capps just overpowered them all day. Our pitching has been really, really good so far."

Leeper finished the day with six hits and four RBI. His home run in game one was his sixth of the season. Jesse Lancaster, Hayduk, Nowak and Faison each tallied four hits. Vinson added three hits.

The two teams conclude the series at 1 p.m. today.
