BURGAW -- Princeton stayed close as long as it could against Tri-County 1-A powerhouse Pender on Wednesday night.

But in the end the Patriots were simply too much to handle.

Pender walked off with a 62-44 victory in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A boys' basketball playoffs despite a sluggish first half that saw Princeton jump out to a six-point lead.

"I thought we played really well for two quarters," said Princeton head coach Jeff Davis. "We got behind in the third quarter and had to go man-to-man in the fourth, and that's when they got away from us."

Wes Wood led the Bulldawgs with 12 points. Matt Williamson added 10 points and eight rebounds. David Gurganus finished with nine points and five assists.

Cameron Pittman paced the Patriots with 19 points.

Princeton concluded the season 13-13 overall.
