Mount Olive women win on senior day

MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive College women's basketball team sent three seniors out with a smile on Saturday as they blasted Converse College 87-52 in Conference Carolinas play.
The game was potentially the final home contest for Helen Moore, Desiree Pickett and Meaghan Vanderhorst. The Trojans could possibly host a first round game in the conference tournament on Monday, but with four teams tied in the standings the seedings will not be determined until today.
Saturday's game started out with an offensive flury by the Trojans.
Led by Moore and Brittany Miller the home team opened up a 51-30 lead at the intermission. Mount Olive made nine 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes with Miller connecting four times.
"Obviously when you make shots in the first few minutes of the game it gives everyone confidence," Trojans' head coach Wendy Lee said. "We were able to work the ball inside-out and when we got an open look our girls knocked it down."
The second half quickly turned into an excercise in roster management for both squads as Mount Olive opened-up a 29-point advatage midway through the 20-minute session. All 14 Trojan players that dressed for the game earned minutes in the second half.
Shequanta McGee paced the Mount Olive offense with 21 points. Moore added 20 points and eight rebounds. Miller and Laporsha Davis each added 14 points.
"We were excited from the opening tip today," said Moore. "I think everyone just let the offense come to them and by working together we were able to free each other up."
Mount Olive finishes the regular season 16-11 overall (15-7 CC).
The Trojans will play on Monday in the opening round of the conference tournament but the opponent and location are yet to be determined.
"I don't think it really matters where we play," said Moore. "I think we have played some of our best ball on the road, but we play a little harder here at home so there are good points either way."
