Goldsboro native John Wooten swatted his first-ever home run in his first-ever collegiate at-bat, and No. 11-ranked East Carolina hammered No. 2-ranked Virginia 6-1 at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Wooten finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Pirates, who improved to 1-1 after a season-opening loss to the Wahoos on Friday.

East Carolina collected 11 hits, including two each from Trent Whitehead, Austin Homan and Cameron Freeman. Kevin Brandt claimed the pitching win, scattering five hits and striking out four UVa batters in six-plus innings.

The three-game series concludes today.
