Wayne Country Day boys charge past Faith Christian-RM

Coming off a brutal stretch of non-conference contests against perennial independent powers, Wayne Country Day needed a "breather" Tuesday evening.

They certainly got it.

Brandon McCarter logged a double-double -- 19 points, 13 rebounds -- as the Chargers crushed Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 83-45 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play. WCDS snapped a three-game skid and claimed its first home victory since Dec. 8, 2009.

"It's good to be back on the winning side," said Chargers head coach Terry Jones. "We've been playing some of the top-tier teams (this season), which we're not afraid to do. We haven't been able to get over that hump yet as it relates to those teams, but we're getting there.

"It's good to come out of something like that into something like this where everybody can go out, play hard and be rewarded for their efforts."

All nine WCDS players scratched in the scoring column.

Hil Tanner provided 15 points, including 12 from 3-point range, and three assists off the bench. Fellow reserve Tyson Pearson contributed 12 points and five rebounds. Rashid Wallace scored nine points, while Tim Hobbs supplied eight points and eight rebounds.

Reco McCarter had six points.

The Chargers (12-6, 2-0 CPIC) rolled to a 21-5 lead after eight minutes of action and quickly extended the margin early in the second quarter. Tanner, Sameer Patel, Williams and Tucker Pearson (four assists) combined to bury four consecutive 3-pointers.

"We played at a very high level ... scoring, whatever the case may have been," said Jones. "We had five guys on the court who were doing all the basic things which makes us a better team on the court. They played very unselfishly and everybody was able to get into a position where they could do what they do well."

WCDS had 17 assists on 32 field goals as a team.

The Chargers shot nearly 50 percent from the floor in the second half and concluded the game 10 of 13 from the free throw line. The Patriots converted 17 total field goals, including five from 3-point range.
