Goldsboro overcame 30 turnovers and slipped past former Eastern Plains 2-A Conference girls' basketball rival North Lenoir, 66-61, inside Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

"Wow, 30 turnovers ... too many," said fourth-year Cougars head coach Brandy Smith. "We've got a young team on the floor, just two starters back from last year and nerves were a factor. After the nerves got out of the way, we kind of picked it up in the second half."

Zeara McDuffie's steal and layup gave the Cougars their first lead, 44-43, late in the third quarter. Another McDuffie steal and layup extended a 15-5 run that gave Goldsboro a 10-point cushion early in the final period.

North Lenoir (3-2 overall) forced turnovers from its full-court trapping press and closed the gap to 59-55 with 4:06 left in regulation. The Hawks seized the lead, 63-61, on Breyauna Kittrell's steal and assist to senior Marissa Lanier, who knocked down an uncontested layup.

Lanier finished with a game- and career-best 36 points.

"She beat us off the dribble all night long," said Smith of Lanier. "She did her job, got to the basket. We've got to fix defensively staying between the man, and the basket because she had her way and kept them in the ballgame."

Goldsboro (2-0) scored the final five points, including Jolon Williams' layup in the final 10 seconds to seal the victory. McDuffie finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Alexus Myles, a first-year starter, contributed a double-double -- 21 points, 13 rebounds.

Deshona Cox complimented Lanier's effort with an 11-point, 17-rebound performance.

Aycock dominates

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's girls opened up a 32-4 halftime lead and rolled to a 55-17, non-conference win over county rival Rosewood on Tuesday evening.

Courtney Sheeks led the Golden Falcons (1-2 overall) with 20 points. Imari Howell added 11.

Laura Vinson scored six points for the Eagles.

Rosewood (0-2) travels to Lejeune tonight, while Aycock is the guest of Greene Central.

WCS victorious

Wayne Christian evened its Carolina Christian 1-A Conference record at 1-1 with a 51-25 victory over visiting Trinity of Durham on Tuesday night.

Hanna Kaler poured in 26 points to go along with nine rebounds and four steals. Kaitlyn Kosuda added eight points, eight rebounds and a block.

The Eagles (2-2 overall) travel to Grace Christian on Saturday.

Warriors dropped

Eastern Wayne could not recover from Havelock's early offensive outburst and suffered a 55-33, non-conference loss Tuesday evening.

The Warriors (1-2 overall) scored on their final four possessions of the opening quarter, and grabbed a 17-15 advantage. The Rams used a 13-2 run before halftime to take control of the game.

Tiarra McIntyre led Eastern Wayne with 13 points. Shontae Boseman and Tia Jones added eight points apiece.

The Warriors entertain Wilson Fike on Friday.

Boy's basketball

Saints win thriller

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne watched an opportunity to win in regulation slip away only to pull out a 75-68, non-conference victory in double overtime over Wilson Hunt on Tuesday night.

The Saints failed to knock down critical free throws that would have put the game away in regulation, but played stingy team defense in the second extra session to pull out the win.

"We should have won in regulation," said Southern Wayne head coach Russell Stephens. "We allowed them to get back in the game and they had the momentum in the first overtime. We had to get back in it. Our team defense was probably the key to the win."

Rashard Hill paced the Saints with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Khari Faison supplied 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Bernard Gross had 12 points and 14 boards. Gary Woodard added 14 points and Justin Artis had 11 points.

Southern Wayne pulled down 65 rebounds.

The Saints (2-2 overall) entertain Jones Senior on Friday night.

PHS stumbles

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Kyle Knowles scored a game-high 24 points as Midway defeated Princeton 79-55 on Tuesday night.

Austin Jacobs led the Bulldogs with nine points. Matt Williamson and Andre Nixon both had eight.

Princeton (0-1 overall) entertains North Johnston on Friday night.

Eagles defeated

Trinity of Durham handed Wayne Christian a 65-36 Carolina Christian 1-A Conference loss on Tuesday night.

Senior Luke Howell led the Eagles with 13 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists. Anthony Mulligan contributed nine rebounds and six points. Chandler Harrell pitched in six points and six rebounds.

Wayne Christian (1-3 overall, 0-2 CCC) travel to Grace Christian on Saturday.

Swimming

YMCA hosts meet

Five area high schools competed with five schools from outside the area in a swim meet contested at the Goldsboro Family YMCA on Tuesday evening.

Clinton compiled a team scored of 100 to finish ahead of second-place Eastern Wayne's total of 94 in the boys portion of the meet. Triton (87), Swansboro (61), South Central (58), Goldsboro (44), Southern Wayne (30), South Johnston (20) and Charles B. Aycock (13) rounded out the team scores.

Clinton earned first-place finishes in the boy's 200 yard medley relay, the boys 100 yard backstroke and the boys 400 yard free relay.

Goldsboro High School's Logan Cole had first-place finishes in the boy's 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle. Eastern Wayne's Shane Legg was first in the boy's 50-yard freestyle and teammate Keith Gregorcyk was first in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Warriors' Collin Hobbs came home first in the one-meter diving.

South Central tallied 144 team points to win the girl's half of the meet. Aycock recorded 86 points to wind up in second place ahead of Eastern Wayne's 68. Southern Wayne (21) was ninth and Rosewood (10) ended the meet in 10th place.

The Golden Falcons' Taylor Allen earned a first-place finish in the girl's 50 yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Aycock's team of Allen, Erica Darner, Bryce Connolly and Nicole McGrath crossed the line in first in the 200-yard free relay.

Eastern Wayne's Joanne Talton was first in the girl's one-meter diving.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Eastern Wayne 46, Havelock 42 -- Jalen Barnes led the Warriors (2-1 overall) with 16 points. Lee Atkinson and Davon Darden both contributed eight points. The Warriors play host to Wilson Fike on Friday.

* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 62, Wilson Hunt 36 -- Ronnell Outlaw and Jamiel Price each scored 15 points for the Saints. Breyon Johnson pitched in six assists. Southern Wayne (1-0 overall) entertains Jones Senior on Friday night.

Middle schools

* Girls' basketball: Spring Creek 31, Brogden 10 -- Spring Creek's Alyssa Borja led all scorers with 13 points. Jaleah Jones scored 10 points and Morgan Stancil added eight. Ebony Robison paced Brogden with eight points. The Gators (2-1 overall) play host to Mount Olive on Thursday.
