E. Wayne boys run past Havelock

Eastern Wayne, again, used a strong second-half offensive effort to defeat non-conference foe Havelock, 56-32, on Tuesday evening.

Turnovers and poor shooting marred the contest for the Rams, who continue to play their early-season games without several key contributors who are still playing with the football team.

Both teams started slowly against tightly-packed zone defenses.

Eight of the first nine possessions in the game resulted in turnovers and the first basket of the contest did not come until three minutes into the first quarter.

"I think both teams were kind of finding their footing," said Warriors head coach Marvin Bowman. "I think as the game wore on, we were able to start beating them down the floor with our depth and quickness."

Trailing 8-7 after the first period, Eastern Wayne turned the tables in the second quarter. Added defensive pressure and up-tempo offense pushed the Warriors ahead 22-14 at halftime.

On the first play of the third quarter, Lamar Best delivered a perfect alley-oop pass to Robert Washington for an emphatic dunk. Eastern Wayne (2-1 overall) reeled off the next nine points and put the game out of reach with a 15-2 run that spanned four minutes.

"That was a big play because it got our guys excited," said Bowman. "We made a couple plays on defense that led to easy buckets and we built a nice lead."

The Warriors played 12 players in the victory with seven scratching in the scoring column. Will White and Rashawn Barnes scored 12 points apiece. Lamar Best added 10 points, while teammate Marvin Bowman Jr. tallied nine points and eight rebounds.

Tavarion Horne led the Rams with 10 points and nine boards.

Eastern Wayne entertains Wilson Fike on Friday.
