First-year head coach Mark Peck and assistant coach Mark Bass agreed the team title chase will be "wide open" when the Falcon Invitational begins Saturday morning at C.B. Aycock in Pikeville.
The day-long wrestling event will have 16 teams, including nine that appeared in the 2009 N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs on either the 1-A, 2-A or 3-A levels.
"It's not realistic to think we can possibly come away with a sweeping victory, but want to get the kids on the mat to implement what they've learned so far," said Peck, who served as Bass' assistant last season. "We've had a great turnout. The kids are young, they're excited, they're self-motivated ... a group of good kids."
Aycock opened its dual-team season with a victory over Princeton on Tuesday.
South Central is the defending Invitational champion.
