HAVELOCK -- Will White scored a team-high 14 points and Eastern Wayne escaped Havelock with a 52-51, season-opening win on Thursday night.

Rashawn Barnes supplied 13 points for the Warriors and Robert Washington added 12. Marvin Bowman had seven points.

The Warriors entertain New Hanover on Tuesday.

WCS defeated

KINSTON -- Issac Brown poured in 29 points as Bethel Christian defeated Wayne Christian 88-58 on Thursday night.

Luke Howell led the Eagles with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. Anthony Mulligan added 14 points and five rebounds. Taylor Johnson had nine points.

Wayne Christian (1-1 overal) opens Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday at Cape Fear Christian.

Girls' basketball

Eagles rally

KINSTON -- Wayne Christian scored the final seven points of the ballgame and rallied past Bethel Christian for a 34-33 win on Thursday night.

The Eagles trailed 33-27 with less than two minutes to play before mounting their comeback.

Hanna Kaler paced Wayne Christian (1-1 overall) with 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Kaitlyn Kosuda added eight points and three rebounds. Kayla Kennedy and Jennifer Price finished with six points apiece, and Summer Brathwaite had eight rebounds.

The Eagles travel to Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Greenwood 41, Brogden 39 -- Shahim Muhammad supplied 18 points for Greenwood (2-0 overall) and Quaviis Holloman pitched in 17 points. Joseph Baker had 14 rebounds. Tyree Manley and Khalil Robinson each scored 16 points for Brogden.

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 38, Spring Creek 23 -- Quanika Artis scored game-high 14 points for Norwayne (2-0 overall). Alyssa Boija led Spring Creek (1-1) with 12 points.
