Wayne Christian opened its boys' basketball season with a 56-33 win over Wayne County Homeschool on Tuesday night.

Luke Howell led the Eagles with 14 points and eight rebounds. Anthony Mulligan added four points and 10 boards, while teammate Terrell Singletary recorded 12 points.

Sam Rouse led the Homeschools with 15 points.

Wayne Christian (1-0 overall) travel to Bethel Christian on Thursday.

Walnut Creek LGA

Josie Ottaviani and Mary Morris shared play-of-the-day honors during weekly tournament action on the Walnut Creek Country Club links.

Mary Ann Sutton captured low gross.

Nancy Satterfield and Evelyn Rose tied for low net, while Betty Holloway seized low putts.

Girls basketball

Chargers downed

Young and inexperienced Wayne Country Day, the defending 1-A independent schools state champion, opened its season with a 46-27 loss to Cary Academy on Tuesday evening.

The host Chargers started two freshmen and two sophomores against a much-taller Cary team that dominated the first three quarters, and built a double-digit advantage. Mikayla Sanders paced the visitors with 14 points and eight rebounds. Teammate Kelsey Lee added 10 points and four boards.

Catherine Ford led WCDS with 15 points and six rebounds. Sarah Best contributed seven points, while Mack Thompson added four points. Mollie McDonald supplied one point.

Wayne Country Day (0-1 overall) plays host to the Charger Tip-Off Classic on Friday.

Eagles grounded

Wayne Christian got off to a slow start and never recovered in a 29-19, season-opening loss to New Life of Raleigh on Tuesday night at Clifford Gymnatorium.

Hannah Kaler led the Eagles with nine points and five steals. Kayla Kennedy added three points and six rebounds in the defeat.

Wayne Christian (0-1 overall) visits Bethel Christian on Thursday.

Gators sunk

SPIVEYS CORNER -- Spring Creek got off to a hot start but could not hold off a late rally by Midway in a 45-35, season-opening loss Tuesday evening.

Spring Creek pulled out to a 15-13 lead after one quarter before the Midway defense picked up the tempo and shut down the Gators' post game.

Melanique DeVeaux led the Gators' offense with 20 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Katlyn Casey and Amy Parker added four points apiece.

Spring Creek (0-1 overall) entertains South Lenoir on Friday.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 61, Cary Academy 48 -- Josiah Davis led Wayne Country Day with 16 points. Cody Neal added 12 points, while teammates Luke Bryan and Zach Syverson each contributed 10 points. Wayne Country Day will play host to Wayne Christian on Thursday.

Middle schools

* Girls' basketball: St. Mary's 30, Wayne Christian 12 -- Cameron and Mackenzy Dove each scored six points apiece for the Eagles. Wayne Christian travels to Cape Fear Christian on Monday.
