Aycock finishes third in ECC 3-A football race

DUDLEY -- Bring on the bracket.

Charles B. Aycock tuned up for the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs with a 40-6 victory over Eastern Carolina Conference rival Southern Wayne on Friday night.

The Golden Falcons unarguably played their most-complete game of the season and owned a 390-118 edge in total offense.

"This was a very good time for this team to play a good all-around game," said C.B. Aycock head coach Randy Pinkowski. "We worked hard this week on fixing the little things, footwork, hand position. Tonight we did them all well."

The Golden Falcons jumped in front on their first possession.

After a directional kick by the Saints was returned to midfield, C.B. Aycock orchestrated an eight-play drive that culminated in a Tyheim Pitt 1-yard touchdown run. On the team's second series, tailback Marcus Cobb found paydirt on a 2-yard scamper.

Trailing 14-0, the Saints caught a break when a punt bounced off a Golden Falcon and was recovered by a host of potential Southern Wayne tacklers. Two minutes later, Quintae Bradshaw plunged into the end zone from 5 yards out.

"I thought we did some good things offensively in stretches," said Saints head coach Bob Warren. "We just were not able to sustain the momentum and develop any consistency."

Southern Wayne stacked the box to slow down Pitt and Cobb, so the Golden Falcons turned to quarterback Tyler Farmer in the second quarter. Farmer found Pitt on a screen pass that turned into a 19-yard touchdown midway through the period.

Before the half ended, Farmer directed the team's two-minute offense and led it into the red zone. Craig Murdock capped the first half with a 38-yard field goal as time expired.

"Southern Wayne took away some of the things that we wanted to do, so we had to look for some other things," said Pinkowski. "We were able to complete a few passes and do some different things to keep ourselves ahead of the chains and keep the ball moving."

Cobb led the Golden Falcons with 139 yards on 20 carries. The area's leading rusher reached the end zone twice. Farmer added 140 passing yards and Murdock tallied four catches for 79 yards.

Javonni Robinson paced the Saints with 72 yards on the ground. Jaquan Cobb added 27 yards on nine totes.
