BEULAVILLE -- Greene Central advanced to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A eastern dual-team, women's tennis championship with a 6-0 victory over East Duplin on Tuesday.

The Rams (21-6 overall) entertain Carrboro on Thursday.

"Today was a total team effort for us," said Rams head coach Donald Clark. "We won three tiebreaks today, and without those wins, this match could very easily have been tied 3-3 after singles. All of my girls played well when it counted most.

"I have seen our team play better certainly, but we were very mentally tough late in the matches on all courts."

Top-seeded Lauren Carraway, second-seeded Elizabeth McLawhorn and sixth-seeded Abbey Dail each captured a third-set tiebreaker in their respective singles match. Samantha Taylor, Jessica Gray and Abby Sugg earned a singles point apiece.

Sugg picked up her team-leading 24th singles win.

Trojans eliminated

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Limestone goalie Mark Davidson recorded two key second-half saves in a 3-0, opening-round victory over Mount Olive College in the 2009 Conference Carolinas men's soccer tournament Tuesday.

Davidson denied the Trojans' Matt Cargile on goal-scoring attempts in the 52nd and 68th minutes.

"He (Davidson) made two great saves on two very good shots," said Mount Olive head coach Jerry Riggs. "Limestone was dominating, but if not for those two saves, it's a 2-2 game. The first one especially would have been nice. Would have given us a little energy, a little life."

Seventh-seeded Mount Olive managed just three shots on goal and concluded its season 6-10-1 overall. It was the final match for seniors Adrian Daniels and Angelo Acquah.

Trojan keepers Jamie Carano and Zac Scott combined for eight saves.
