Jones' fourth-quarter TD lifts James Kenan to road win

SALEMBURG -- Quarterback Parker Jones rushed for the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter, and James Kenan stopped Lakewood 13-8 in a Tri-County 1-A Conference football game Friday evening.

Jones' 1-yard plunge sealed the Tigers' comeback win.

"That play was huge, because we were able to move the ball all night, but for one reason or another we couldn't get into the end zone," said James Kenan head coach Ken Avent Jr.. "We were able to make a play, get a defensive stop and run out the clock in the final minutes which showed good execution."

Jones accounted for 96 of Kenan's 243 yards of total offense.

Victor Parker emerged the Tigers' top rusher with 90 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Parker's 1-yard scoring dive put Kenan ahead 7-0 just before halftime.

Lakewood (4-4 overall, 0-4 TC) answered with a third-period touchdown and two-point conversion. Jones, who completed seven passes, answered the Leopards' challenge with his fourth-quarter score.

Kenan linebacker Kyle Bostic recorded a career-high 26 tackles. Teammate Curtis Williams had three tackles for loss and five overall.

The Tigers (5-3, 3-1) visit Midway on Friday.

Dawgs roll on road

CALYPSO -- Princeton remained one of three unbeaten teams on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene with a 38-14 triumph over North Duplin at H.E. Grubbs Field on Friday evening.

The Dawgs (6-2 overall) are 2-0 in league play along with Ayden-Grifton and newcomer Goldsboro.

Senior quarterback threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns -- two to senior Matt Williamson and one scoring strike to Dillon Daughtry. Daughtry finished with a team-leading 116 yards on eight receptions.

Princeton grabbed a 19-0, first-quarter lead.

Gurganus opened the scoring with a 1-yard run. Daughtry's 20-yard TD catch and Patrick Jacobs' 1-yard plunge accounted for the quick start.

"We knew we had to set the tone by getting off to a fast start," said Princeton head coach Russell Williamson. "The first quarter went about how we wanted, then in the second quarter we caught the injury bug and couldn't do anything to move the ball."

North Duplin (2-6, 0-2) pulled within two scores on Devin Oliver's 49-yard, second-quarter touchdown. Oliver paced the Rebels' rushing attack with 149 yards on 22 carries.

The Dawgs collected three second-half touchdowns.

Princeton visits Goldsboro on Friday, while North Duplin travels to Ayden-Grifton.

Gators beaten

AYDEN -- Dontay Boseman threw for 100 yards during Spring Creek's 59-27 road loss at Carolina 1-A Conference rival Ayden-Grifton.

Melvin DeVeaux hauled in a 77-yard touchdown pass for the Gators.

Ricky Brayboy led Spring Creek's ground game with 29 yards.

The Gators (1-7 overall, 0-2 CC) travel to Rosewood on Friday.
