Eagles' Jones places 2nd in four-team cross country meet

Connor Jones grabbed second-place honors during a four-team, non-conference boys' cross country meet contested Friday afternoon at Waynesborough Park.

Jones covered the 3.1-mile (5K) course in 18 minutes, 18 seconds. Teammates Mark Sawyer (20:03) and Will Massey (21:07) ended up third and ninth, respectively. The trio, along with Will Garner and Nick Sullivan, posted a third-place, team score of 53.

Southern Wayne's Trevor Morgan (20:21) and Cole Bird (20:40) crossed the finish line fifth and sixth, respectively. Teammate Daniel Nielsom was eighth overall in 21 minutes. Rashad McCoy and Logan Johnson completed the Saints' runner-up score of 47 points.

Cresset won the meet with 38 points.

On the girls' side, Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price (23:11) and Christina Foster (26:34) claimed second and third, respectively. The Saints' Kanesha Jones (27:06) captured fourth, followed by Wayne Christian's Kayla Kennedy (27:15).

Bianca McCotter ended up ninth overall for the Saints.

Wayne Christian won the team race 32-56 over Southern Wayne.

The Eagles return to action Monday at Faith Christian of Rocky Mount, while Southern Wayne participates in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference Championships on Tuesday.

Soccer

Chargers stumble

Faith Christian of Rocky Mount scored on a penalty kick eight minutes into the game and escaped with a 1-0 win at Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference rival Wayne Country Day on Friday.

The Chargers finished with an 18-10 advantage in shots on goal.

Cody Neal had six saves in goal.

Wayne Country Day (11-6-1 overall, 1-4-1 CPIC) entertains Waccamaw Academy on Monday.

Volleyball

Conquerors advance

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian advanced to the quarterfinal round of the N.C. Christian Schools Coastal Region 2-A tournament with a 25-12, 25-23, 25-21 win at Berean Christian on Friday night.

Christina Powell handed out 10 assists to go along with two digs and two service aces. Zoe Singer nine kills, seven digs, three blocks. Courtney Albritton added seven aces and six kills.

Elizabethe Weeks provided six digs. Madison Caudle contributed three aces and three kills.

Faith Christian (8-6 overall) plays an undetermined opponent on Tuesday.
