Goldsboro native gets NCHSAA's top post

CHAPEL HILL -- Goldsboro native and Rosewood High graduate Davis Whitfield has been selected the next executive director of the N.C. High School Athletic Association.
The 39-year-old Whitfield succeeds Charlie Adams, who has been executive director of the NCHSAA since 1984 and with the Association since 1967. Adams will officially retire in January 2010.
Currently the associate commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Whitfield has served on the commissioner's executive staff and manages 22 sports and 21 conference championship events. He provides oversight of all aspects of the Olympic sports regular season as well as develop multi-year schedules, address sportsmanship and enforcement conference game management policies.
"Davis is an excellent selection as the next executive director of the N.C. High School Athletic Association," said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. "His enthusiasm, energy and values are among the many qualities that make Davis a talented administrator and leader."
Prior to joining the ACC office, Whitfield spent time as the assistant athletics director for operations and facilities management at Wake Forest. He stayed there for four years and held a similar position at Campbell University through the late 1980s.
An East Carolina graduate, Whitfield worked at the 1996 Atlanta Games (summer Olympics) with the International Baseball Association. He has also worked several NCAA women's soccer and baseball championships, and represented the ACC at local, regional and state events.
Whitfield and wife, Nicole, reside in Jamestown with their two children Will and Sydney Grace. Whitfield was inducted into the charter class of the Rosewood High Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.
