DURHAM -- Wayne Christian used a balanced offensive effort to down Carolina Christian 1-A Conference opponent Cresset Christian 25-17, 25-21, 24-26, 25-22 on Wednesday afternoon.
Brittany O'Hara led the Eagles with 13 kills and eight digs. Hanna Kaler dished out 21 assists and tallied seven service aces in the win. Summer Brathwaite contributed four kills.
Wayne Christian (15-5 overall, 9-3 CCC) travels to Northwood Temple today. First serve is 6 p.m.
Rebels fall
SALEMBURG -- North Duplin never got its offense in gear in a 25-12, 25-13, 25-19 non-conference loss against Lakewood on Wednesday.
Tearra Ammons led the Rebels with five kills and five blocks. Hannah Brock tallied six digs and five assists. Teammate Scarlett Martin also tallied six digs.
North Duplin (6-6 overall) travels to Goldsboro today.
Cross country
1-A runners shine
Goldsboro defended its home course with strong performance and claimed first-place honors during the third Carolina 1-A Conference cross country meet of the season Wednesday.
The Cougars finished with 47 team points which was good enough to hold off North Duplin (50) and Princeton (69). Brian Johnson paced the home team with a third-place individual effort.
Rosewood's Nick Britt finished first overall in 17 minutes, 42 seconds.
On the girls' side, Princeton held off rival Rosewood 31-33, while Goldsboro tallied 62 points.
Hattie Dougherty claimed first place individually with a time of 22:10. Spring Creek's Savannah Egelston ran second and Rosewood's Holly Heath finished third.
The Carolina 1-A Conference teams will run again Oct. 7 at Cliffs of the Neuse.
Tennis
Rams rally
SNOW HILL -- Greene Central got a spirited doubles effort and knocked off Rocky Mount 5-4 in non-conference tennis action on Wednesday.
The tandems of Lauren Carraway-Elizabeth McLawhorn and Jessica Gray-Abbey Dail each claimed a much-needed point in doubles play.
Gray, Samantha Taylor and Abby Sugg each won their respective singles matches.
Greene Central (15-5 overall) will play host to Farmville Central today at 4 p.m.
Warriors ace Hawks
Eastern Wayne swept through singles play and never looked back in a 9-0 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Triton on Wednesday.
Danielle Daniel, Janielle Daniel, Miller Delbridge, Warner Underwood, Amber Miller and Grace Delbridge each earned a singles point.
The duos of Danielle Daniel-Underwood, Miller Delbidge-Janielle Daniel and Grace Delbridge-Miller each won their respective doubles match.
Eastern Wayne (11-3 overall, 6-0 ECC) entertains C.B. Aycock today at 4 p.m.
Soccer
Eagles prevail
Rosewood got a hat trick (three goals) from Scott Pate in a 5-0 decision over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Goldsboro on Wednesday afternoon.
Antonio Henriques and Brett Robinson added one goal apiece.
Rosewood (4-6-1 overall, 2-0 CC) travels to defending conference champion Spring Creek on Monday.
JV sports
* Volleyball: North Duplin d. Lakewood 25-10, 25-11 -- Alonna Pate finished with five kills for the Rebels. Ansley Hill dished out six assists and Jessica Jones recorded four digs.
* Volleyball: Wayne Country Day d. Oakwood 28-26, 15-25, 25-15 -- Jessica Zhou led the Charger offense with six aces. Sarah Crooks tallied three kills. Wayne Country Day improved to 3-4 overall.
* Boys' soccer: C.B. Aycock 5, Beddingfield 0 -- Trey Millard and Kyle Powell scored two goals apiece for the Golden Falcons. A.J. Johnson added one goal as Aycock improved to 3-1-0 this season.
Middle schools
* Volleyball: Narwayne d. Greenwood 25-21, 25-9, 25-27, 25-18 -- Emily Borrell led the Cobras with 17 service points. Meredith Burroughs added eleven points. Norwayne improved to 4-1 overall.
