The Quail Point Chapter of Quail Unlimited will host its annual fundraising banquet tonight at Lane Tree Golf Club. The banquet is the conservation group's largest fundraiser and has steadily grown since the program's inception.

Quail Unlimited's local chapters use proceeds from their respective banquets to fund local habitat projects to benefit quail and other grassland species. Chapters are also involved in information and education, and are especially interested in working with local landowners and area youth.

A national conservation organization, Quail Unlimited was founded in 1981 to combat the problem of dwindling quail populations as a result of declining habitat. In the last five years, Quail Unlimited chapters have been responsible for almost 20 million dollars in habitat expenditures.

Quail Unlimited biologists have been active in promoting wildlife provisions of the Federal Farm bills as well as being active members of the Southeastern Quail Study Group. One of the recent provisions of farm bill legislation is the CP-33 practice of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).

This practice provides for upland habitat buffers that greatly benefit quail and other early successional species.

Each state has a specific allotment of acreage available for entrance into the programs. The CP-33 practice offers great opportunities for those interested in quail management and improving overall habitat on their properties.

The Quail Point banquet is open to the public and tickets are available for $275. The evening activities include a meal, raffle and an auction. For more information about Quail Unlimited and the local Quail Point Chapter, call Wade Teagues at (919) 920-3790.
