Trojans' Urquiola finishes second at TPC Sawgrass

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Valentina Urquiola finished second out of 80 golfers as Mount Olive College wrapped up play at the Queens University of Charlotte Invitational at TPC Sawgrass on Tuesday.

Urquiola, who shot a 150, tied for the second-lowest 36-hole score. However, she received second-place honors by virtue of a tie-breaker based the lowest back nine score in the second round.

A sophomore from Venezuela, Urquiola finished first-round play tied for third. Teammate Tegan Skirpstas (185) finished 75th, followed by Lindsey Becker (79th). The Trojans did not have enough players to qualify for a team score.

Mount Olive returns to action Oc. 6-7 in the Lenoir-Rhyne University Intercollegiate at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Women's soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- Cara Paxson collected two goals, but Mount Olive College settled for a 2-2 draw against in-state Conference Carolinas rival Pfeiffer University on Tuesday afternoon.

Paxson scored 88 seconds into the contest and converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute. The Falcons answered with goals in the 18th and 84th minutes.

Lyndsey McIntyre recorded four saves for MOC.

The Trojans (3-4-2 overall, 1-1-1 CC) begin a three-game road swing Saturday at conference foe Converse (S.C.) College.

Women's volleyball

HIGH POINT -- Mount Olive College senior Racey Bartley has been named the Conference Carolinas women's volleyball player of the year.

Bartley averaged 4.64 kills per set and logged a sparkling .519 hitting percentage as the Trojans captured three conference road victories at Barton, Limestone and Converse College.

In three matches, Bartley pounded out 51 kills.

Mount Olive (4-12 overall, 4-0 CC) entertains in-state rival Lees-McRae on Friday. First serve is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

Men's soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- Matt Cargile and Scott Mitchell each scored in the final 21 minutes of regulation, but in-state opponent Pfeiffer University upended Mount Olive 3-2 in Conference Carolinas play Tuesday evening.

Kash Knight scored twice for the Falcons.

Mount Olive (4-3-0 overall, 1-2-0 CC) entered the game ranked No. 10 in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll. The Trojans have dropped three of their last four contests.

Keeper Zac Scott had six saves for MOC.

The Trojans travel to Catawba on Friday.
