ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Christian erased an early two-goal deficit and stunned No. 1-ranked Faith Christian of Rocky Mount 3-2 on Monday afternoon.
Seth Muller and Christian Davis each scored in the first half as the previously-unbeaten Patriots (9-1-0 overall) controlled the action.
Wayne Christian came out with renewed vigor after the intermission and got on the board when Jordan Crouthanel found Gregory Alexander with a through ball that Alexander immediately rocketed into the net.
The Eagles tied the score in the 68th minute when Alexander tallied his second goal of the contest. With all the momentum resting squarely on the Wayne Christian sideline, Tyler Mooring found John Thomas Norris for the deciding goal with just four minutes to play in the game.
Chase King led the Eagles defense with 14 saves.
Wayne Christian (10-5-0) entertains Trinity of Raleigh today at 4 p.m.
Saints win opener
ERWIN -- Southern Wayne opened its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference schedule in impressive fashion with a 5-1 victory over Triton on Monday night.
Jesus Rodriguez led the Saints with four goals. Jose Avilla added one goal for Southern Wayne.
The Saints (1-5-0 overall, 1-0-0 ECC) entertain North Lenoir on Wednesday night.
CBA tallies win
LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir claimed an early lead, but could not hold on as C.B. Aycock claimed a 4-2 victory to open the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference season.
Juan Pina tallied two goals for the Golden Falcons. Jose Rodriguez and Brandon Davis each added one marker respectively.
C.B. Aycock (8-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 ECC) visits South Johnston on Wednesday.
Tennis
Rams down Aces
SNOW HILL -- Edenton Holmes claimed the first two points in singles play, but Greene Central earned the rest en route to a 6-3 victory on Monday afternoon.
Samantha Taylor, Jessica Gray, Abby Sugg and Abbey Dail each earned a singles point for the Rams. The tandems of Lauren Carraway-Elizabeth McLawhorn and Gray-Dail each prevailed in doubles action.
"Jessica Gray turned in her best performance of the year," said Rams head coach Donald Clark. "I was particularly pleased with the way she reacted when things didn't go her way."
Greene Central (11-5 overall) entertains Tarboro today.
Eagles down Rebels
CALYPSO -- Rosewood defeated Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Duplin 7-2 on Monday afternoon.
Katie Hoff, Mareke Parrish, Brooke Bell and Chelsea Sasser each earned a point in singles play. The tandems of Elise McSwain-Bell, Dakota Hersey-Sasser and Hoff-Parrish each prevailed in doubles play.
Rosewood (1-4 overall, 1-1 CC) travels to Spring Creek today.
WCS rolls
ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Christian swept through singles play and never looked back in a 9-0 victory over Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Monday.
Faith Sutton and Savannah Sutton each claimed their respective singles match 6-0, 6-0. Brooke Barfield, Samantha Reaves, Blake Govan and Taylor Willman also won in singles action.
The tandems of Savannah Sutton-Barfield, Gina Wall-Willman and Reaves-Govan each earned a doubles point respectively.
Volleyball
Chargers edged
KENLY -- Wayne Country Day could not ride the emotional wave of a thrilling first set as North Johnston claimed a 29-31, 25-22, 25-12, 26-24 victory on Monday afternoon.
Kim Martell led the Chargers' offense with 15 kills and 10 digs. Sterling Coggins dished out 15 assists. Teammate Hanah Pearson delivered 11 kills in the loss.
"I am really proud of the effort tonight," said Chargers head coach Juliet Jones. "Last week we had some issues with players being sick and it threw everyone off, but tonight they came out and fought hard."
Wayne Country Day (5-4 overall) travels to Epiphany today.
Eagles soar
ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Christian rode the early momentum of a dominating first set to a convincing 25-10, 25-16, 27-29, 25-11 win over Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Monday afternoon.
Hanna Kaler led the Eagles with 11 aces and 18 assists. Middle hitter Kaitlyn Kosuda paced the Wayne Christian attack with nine kills. Summer Brathwaite added six kills in the win.
Wayne Christian (11-4 overall) entertains Trinity of Raleigh today at 4 p.m.
Conquerors win
Faith Christian played its best volleyball of the season en route to a 25-12, 26-24, 25-27, 25-23 win over Bethel Christian on Monday.
Madison Caudle tallied seven kills in the victory. Christina Powell finished with 14 assists and Courtney Albritton added four aces and three digs.
Faith Christian travels to Neuse Christian today.
Cross country
WCS makes strides
WILSON -- Wayne Christian's Connor Jones finished just one-tenth of a second out of first place during the Eagles' six-team meet at Wilson Christian on Monday.
Jones finished in 18 minutes and 25 seconds, while teammate Noah Kerney came home in 21:32. Will Massey (22:09), Will Garner (26:15) and Matthew Laramee (29:53) rounded out the Eagles' team score.
On the girls' side, Jennifer Price paced Wayne Christian with a time of 28:39. Christina Foster (28:46), Kayla Kennedy (30:34), Tiffany Price (34:23) and Morgan Matthews (34:45) comprised the Eagles 87 point total.
JV sports
* Volleyball: Faith Christian d. Bethel Christian 25-19, 25-9 -- Elizabeth Weeks tallied six kills and four aces in the win. Katie Watson recorded three kills. Faith Christian will take on Liberty Christian on Oct. 5.
* Soccer: Faith Christian-Rocky Mount d. Wayne Christian 5-1 -- Victor Kokiko tallied the lone goal for the Eagles off an assists from Nathan Taylor.
* Soccer: C. B. Aycock d. North Lenoir 3-2 -- Kyle Powell led the Golden Falcons with two goals. Billy Leggett rounded out the scoring in the win.
Middle schools
* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Brogden 25-1, 25-7, 16-25, 25-17 -- The Eagles will play host to Norwayne on Thursday.
* Soccer: Eastern Wayne d. Greenwood 3-0 -- Eddie Rubio and Luke Smith each recorded a goal in the win. Jake Herlihy tallied a goal and an assist. Eastern Wayne improved to 4-0 overall.
* Soccer: Brogden d. Mount Olive 8-1 -- Daniel Barahose led the Rams with four goals. Jose Ponce added two markers while teammates Juan Pineda and Romelio Sanchez each scored once.
* Soccer: Spring Creek d. Grantham 9-0 -- Oscar Osario and Brayan Lopez each tallied two goals for the Gators. Marcos Castaneda finished with one goal and one assist. Jose Sanchez also scored.
