SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Alicia Mote recorded a double-double -- 13 kills, 11 digs -- as Mount Olive swept Converse 25-22, 25-14, 25-23 in a Conference Carolinas women's volleyball match Saturday.

Racey Bartley supplied 16 kills and three blocks for the Trojans, who remained tied with in-state rival Lees-McRae at 4-0 in conference play.

Joanie Werling handed out 43 assists.

Mount Olive (4-12 overall) opened the weekend with a five-set victory at Limestone (S.C.) College on Friday. Junior transfer Christiane Maul logged a double-double -- 15 kills, 10 digs -- in a 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-12, 15-6 triumph over the Saints.

The Trojans snapped a seven-game skid in the series.

Bartley posted a match-high 19 kills, while Caitlin Skislak contributed a double-double -- 11 kills, 10 digs. Mote and Alexandra Simon registered 15 and 10 digs, respectively.

Werling handed out a season-high 55 assists.

Mount Olive entertains Lees-McRae at 7 p.m. Friday.

Men's soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- John Mendoza and Scott Mitchell each scored in the first 13 minutes and Mount Olive upended Belmont Abbey 2-1 in their Conference Carolinas soccer match at Amon Field.

The two teams played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie last year, but Mount Olive needed less than 10 minutes to get on the scoreboard Saturday

Mendoza struck in the ninth minute and Mitchell collected the game winner in the 13th minute off Angelo Acquah's assist.

Trojan keeper Zac Scott collected eight saves.

Mount Olive (4-2-0 overall, 1-1-0 CC) entertain in-state foe Pfeiffer University on Tuesday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.

Cross country

GREENVILLE -- Mount Olive College cross country standouts Kerry Maloney and Melissa Moore each registered a top-five finish during the annual East Carolina University Invitational contested Saturday.

Maloney completed the men's 8K course in a season-best 27 minutes, 25 seconds, giving him third overall among the 24 Division II runners who competed in the race.

Teammate Kevin Ryan (27:54) placed fifth among Division II competitors and 15th overall, while Paul Hoffman (28:10) ended up 18th overall. Ronnie Sturgill (27th) and Rashaad Nelson (29th) rounded out the Trojans' team score of 88 points.

ECU won the meet with 25 points.

On the women's side, Moore wound up fifth out of 14 Division II runners and 16th overall with a time of 22:25 on the 5K course. Teammates Rocio Alvarado (25th), Caitlin Pye (28th), Tiondra Miller (29th) and Megan Jones (32nd) contributed to MOC's team score of 106.

The Pirates scored a perfect 15 points to take the meet.

Mount Olive runs again Oct. 2 at the UNC Charlotte Invitational.

Women's soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- Celene Molera scored in the 52nd minute and Belmont Abbey nipped Mount Olive College 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play Saturday afternoon at Amon Field.

The loss snapped the Trojans' three-match win streak.

Defense was the theme in the first half as neither team registered a shot attempt until the 18th minute. Mount Olive nearly got on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute when Rebeccah Hecke lofted a shot from 28 yards out. Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Kelsey Lovell tipped the ball up and caught it just in front of the goal.

Trojan goalkeeper Lyndsey McIntyre (three saves) made a diving save on Erika Trivisonno's shot in the 25th minute and the two teams went into halftime tied 0-0.

The Trojans (3-4-1 overall, 1-1-0 CC) play host to Pfeiffer University on Tuesday. Kickoff is 4 p.m. at Amon Field.
