If the first two matches are any indication, the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference girls' golf race should be a good one this fall.
Charles B. Aycock freshman Tara Simmons and Eastern Wayne senior Jasmine Reeves, for the second straight week, battled to the final hole at Lane Tree Golf Club. Simmons claimed medalist honors with a nine-hole round of 38, two strokes better than Reeves.
"Today we played like I think we are capable," said Golden Falcons head coach Roger Rhodes. "I was looking for improvement and today I think our girls played smart and did everything they could to get better."
Simmons started her round with three consecutive pars before making a birdie on the 289-yard fourth hole. A par at No. 5 kept Simmons below par until a run of three consecutive bogeys dropped her to 2-over par.
Reeves started slowly with bogeys on four of the first five holes. A birdie on the short par-4 No. 6 gave the Warrior a little life. She finished the round with two pars and a bogey.
"Jasmine is very consistent and I think that will only help her as the season progresses," said Warriors head coach Scott Waller. "We need to keep practicing and keep getting better so hopefully we can be playing our best when the conference championship and the regional come around."
The Golden Falcons cut 17 strokes off their season-opening score and finished with three-player total of 134. Lauren Larison and Jesse Stewart carded rounds of 46 and 50, respectively.
Eastern Wayne collected a 162 that included Emily Deal's 59 and Marissa Williams' 63.
Darian Edwards paced Southern Wayne's 164-point effort with a 46. Charity Wright contributed a 54. Mallory Dray and Savanah Morgan each scored a 61.
Aycock is the ECC leader after 18 holes (two rounds) with a 285. Three strokes separate Southern Wayne (326) and Eastern Wayne (329).
The teams return to action Monday at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.
