Goldsboro started strong and fended off Rocky Mount Prep 25-13, 25-21, 22-25, 10-25, 15-4 on the high school volleyball scene Wednesday afternoon.

Sterling Simmons paced the Cougars with three service aces. Natalia Dungee added six kills. Yusely and Yunely Lares led the Goldsboro defense with a strong floor game.

"I am so proud of how these girls finished," said Cougars head coach T.J. Lancaster. "In the two years that I have been the coach, we have never been ahead 2-0 in a match. We faltered a little bit but we stayed with it and got the win."

Goldsboro (1-5 overall) travels to Wayne Country Day on Tuesday.

Gators sunk

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek captured the first set, but couldn't keep the momentum in a 21-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-14 non-conference loss to Hobbton on Wednesday.

Randi Oxendine led the Gators with six aces, four assists and four digs. Kelsey Rogers added seven kills and two blocks. Brittany Collier chipped in four assists and three digs.

Spring Creek (0-3 overall) entertains Wayne Christian on Monday.

Warriors downed

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne dropped a 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 10-25, 4-15 decision to Wilson Fike on Wednesday afternoon.

Emily Sparks finished with three service aces and two kills for the Warriors. Carissa Turner added four kills.

Eastern Wayne (1-4 overall) plays host to New Bern today.

Tennis

Falcons triumph

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock captured five singles matches and dumped former conference foe Wilson Hunt 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

Hollie Baker, Ashley Howell, Harlie Howard, Nicole Kessler and Katie Gurley each earned a point in singles play for the Golden Falcons.

"I was really pleased with how well we played in singles," said Aycock head coach Brad Matthews. "We are still trying to mix up our doubles and find the right chemistry, but right now we aren't being aggressive enough."

The tandem of Kessler-Amanda Farmer captured the Golden Falcons' lone doubles point.

C.B. Aycock (3-2 overall) entertains No. 2-ranked Rocky Mount today at 4 p.m.

Rams stumble

RALEIGH -- No. 2-ranked Greene Central stepped into the 4-A ranks and suffered a 9-0 loss to No. 6-ranked Raleigh Broughton on Wednesday afternoon.

"We probably played our best tennis of the season despite the score," said Rams head coach Donald Clark. "Broughton is one of the most-storied 4-A programs in the state and we enjoyed playing them."

Greene Central travels to archrival Tarboro today at 4 p.m.

Soccer

Hawks top Eagles

North Lenoir raced out to an early lead and held off a furious comeback attempt in a 6-3, non-conference win over Rosewood on Wednesday.

Matt Shaw, Brett Robinson and Zach Behrend recorded one goal apiece for the Eagles. Will Grantham tallied 10 saves in goal.

Rosewood (0-2 overall) travels to Midway today.

JV sports

* Volleyball: Hobbton d. Spring Creek 25-19, 25-15 -- Jana Price led the Gators with four service aces. Lolita Corenno added three aces.

* Volleyball: Fike d. Eastern Wayne 24-26, 25-23, 25-16 -- Stephanie Smith led the Warriors with six service aces. Brooke Dougherty tallied four kills.
