PIKEVILLE -- Greene Central won all three doubles matches to rally for a 5-4 victory at Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams trailed 4-2 after singles play before the tandems of Elizabeth McLawhorn-Lauren Carraway, Samantha Taylor-Abby Sugg and Abbey Dail-Hayes Lovett each recorded doubles wins.
"We played very well in doubles today, and we had to after losing four singles matches," said Greene Central head coach Donald Clark. "I was particularly pleased with the play of sophomore Hayes Lovett and senior Abbey Dail at number three doubles. They lost the first two games, but then they really settled down and played solid doubles.
"Hayes did an outstanding job of maintaining her composure in her first varsity action of the season."
Hollie Baker, Ashley Howell, Harlie Howard and Katie Gurley all earned singles victories for the Golden Falcons. Carraway and Sugg picked up singles points for the Rams.
Greene Central (1-1 overall) travels to Rocky Mount today, while Aycock (1-1) visits East Duplin on Thursday.
WCS victorious
Wayne Christian began its season with a 7-1 rout of Faith Christian of Rocky Mount at Herman Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Brooke Barfield, Faith Sutton, Savannah Sutton, Samantha Reaves, Taylor Willman and Gina Wall were each winners in singles play.
The doubles teams of Barfield-Faith Sutton and Savannah Sutton-Reaves were also victorious.
Wayne Christian (1-0 overall) travels to Trinity-Raleigh for a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference match Tuesday.
Volleyball
Eagles triumph
Wayne Christian opened Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-14 victory over Northwood Temple at Clifford Gymnatorium.
Hanna Kaler provided 15 assists and four kills, while Crissi Brogneaux had 15 digs and three service aces. Haley Greenwood chipped in 13 digs and four aces. Kaitlyn Kosuda contributed nine kills and Brittney O'Hara added seven kills.
The Eagles (3-0, 1-0 CCC) visit Community Christian on Friday.
Gators stumble
NEWTON GROVE -- Spring Creek suffered a season-opening, 20-25, 25-14, 13-25, 22-25 loss against Hobbton on Tuesday.
Brittany Collier provided 12 kills, six service aces and an assist for the Gators. Randi Oxendine added 12 assists and three aces.
Spring Creek (0-1) entertains Eastern Wayne on Aug. 25.
Rams defeated
AYDEN -- Greene Central dropped a 25-21, 25-18, 25-15 decision at Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.
Shonice Pettaway turned in 13 kills and two blocks for the Rams and Amanda Sugg supplied 12 assists.
Greene Central (0-2 overall) visits Charles B. Aycock on Thursday.
Cougars drop two
Unbeaten North Lenoir handed Goldsboro a 25-4, 25-6, 25-4 loss on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars opened their volleyball season with a 25-8, 25-13, 25-14 loss to Hobbton on Monday afternoon. Anastazja Harris led the Cougars' attack with an excellent floor game that included multiple assists.
Goldsboro (0-2 overall) is the guest of Wilson Fike on Thursday.
Soccer
Eagles prevail
Wayne Christian opened its season and Carolina Christian 1-A Conference action with a 5-0 decision over Northwood Temple.
Chase Darden got the Eagles on the board with a goal off an assist from Davis Taylor in the 22nd minute. Gregory Alexander pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute on an assist from Taylor.
Alexander, Darden and Jordan Crouthamel each tacked on goals in the second half. Alexander and Bryson Tart each contributed an assist. Chase King recorded six saves for Wayne Christian.
The Eagles (1-0 overall) face Community Christian in The Brittany V on Friday in Wilson.
Golf
Lane Tree LGA
WILSON -- Betty Jean Gurley captured first low net during second flight play in an Eastern Ladies League meet at Willow Springs Country Club.
Eileen Henderson took second low net and was closest to the pin (hole No. 10) in third flight play. In fourth flight, Linda Hilburn claimed low gross.
Barbara Hill seized game-of-the-week and low net during weekly tournament action on the Lane Tree Golf Club links. Linda Watson earned low putts.
Walnut Creek LGA
WILSON -- Nancy Satterfield and Linda Cannon won first net and low putts, respectively, in third flight play during an Eastern Ladies League meet at Willow Springs Country Club.
In the Pro-Lady Invitational at Walnut Creek Country Club, the foursome of Howard Hunt, Evelyn Rose, Terry Columbus and Teresa Jones shared top honors in first flight with Mike Cato, Brook Eason, Josie Ottaviani and Littman.
The quartet of J.J. Johnson, Kathy Woodard, Jewel Ivey and Cooke Horton prevailed in fourth flight. Jay Rose, Novella Zambelli, Faye Franklin and Joyce Reynolds finished tied in sixth flight.

Volleyball: North Lenoir d. Goldsboro 25-20, 25-3 -- Goldsboro visits Wilson Fike on Thursday.
Volleyball: Hobbton d. Goldsboro 25-4, 25-16 -- The Cougars opened their 2009 campaign with a two-game loss to the Wildcats.
