Senior Legion: Wayne County, Ahoskie split doubleheader

MOUNT OLIVE -- After watching Ahoskie Post 102 slap the ball around Scarborough Field to take game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, Wayne County Post 11 returned the favor in the nightcap.

Cambric Moye and Cody Richards cranked out timely RBI singles in the sixth inning as Post 11 emerged victorious 7-6 and salvaged a split in its regular-season finale.

Ahoskie claimed the opener 7-4.

Trailing by a run in game two, Tyler Edwards fueled Wayne County's comeback with a lead-off double to start the sixth inning. John Wooten, who hit a tape-measure home run in his previous at-bat, drew an intentional walk.

Moye followed with a game-tying base hit and Richards collected the game-winning RBI.

Edwards, Wooten and Moye combined to score every run in the second game and each finished with three hits. Moye's two-RBI single created a 3-3 tie in the second inning.

Wooten's home run knotted the contest at 5-5.

Playoff-bound Ahoskie pounded Post 11's pitching staff for 16 hits in the opener. Post 102 strung together four hits in the first inning and scored twice.

Aaron Haggard, who had six hits on the afternoon, contributed a two-out, two-RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Wayne County retaliated with a two-run, third-inning surge. Josh Frederick walked, Edwards doubled and Nick McGee walked to load the bases with no outs in the scorebook.

But the big inning never materialized. Wooten hit into a force play and Scott Holloman supplied an RBI sacrifice fly.

Richards added a solo home run in the sixth inning to close the gap to 6-3.

Post 102 carried a four-run lead into the bottom of the seventh and had to weather a Post 11 rally. With two outs, Wooten smashed a triple to center field and scored when Holloman reached on an error. Moye kept Wayne County alive with a base hit to center field, but Ahoskie reliever Brent Bowen recorded a game-ending strikeout to halt the comeback attempt.

Wayne County (9-6 overall) begins defense of its Area I East title at home Tuesday against Edenton. First pitch is 7 p.m.
