RED OAK -- Wayne County North rallied for four seventh-inning runs and edged Northern Nash 10-9 on the American Junior Legion baseball scene Sunday afternoon.

Hunter Newsome doubled and tripled in a 3-for-4 performance. Greg Simms and Nolan James supplied two hits apiece.

Hunter Barnette emerged the winning pitcher.

Cal Ripken action

Four of five Wayne County All-Star teams emerged victorious on opening day of the Eastern N.C. Babe Ruth District 4 tournaments at Grantham Middle School.

Dillon Burrell, Jacob Holmes and Jay Wiseman each batted 4-for-4 as the North Wayne 8-under squad hammered Wilson's 7U team 16-1 in a four-inning affair. Cal Reese finished with three hits in three at-bats.

North Wayne opposes South Wayne at 6:30 p.m. today.

South Wayne plated the game-winning run on a sixth-inning error to edge Wilson County 10-9. Kolby Harris ripped a bases-loaded triple in the sixth and scored on an errant throw to cap the five-run comeback.

In 10U competition, Cameron Kornegay threw a complete-game, seven-hitter as Wayne County knocked off Wilson County 5-2. Tanner Stevens, Trey Jordan, Noah Daniels and Christopher Hitch led the victors with two hits apiece.

Wayne County's 12U team slipped past Greene County 9-8 in game one of their best-of-three series. Ryan Davis doubled in a 3-for-4 effort, while Jordan Gurley contributed two hits.

Game two is Tuesday at 8 p.m.

In the 11U division, Bryson Worrell slugged a grand slam home run as Wilson County slipped past Wayne County 10-7 in game one of their best-of-three series. Worrell and Sean Craig each batted 4-for-4 in the victory.

Trent Marguard, Ethan Quinn and Tanner Rose each had two hits apiece for Wayne County.

Game two is today at 8 p.m.

Wayne County wins

DUNN -- Wayne County slipped past Mount Olive 5-4 in the Dixie Youth District 2 Majors tournament held at Tyler Park.

Tyler Powell paced Wayne County's offense with three hits. J.C. Toler provided two hits. Kyler Bradley contributed a hit and Jeffrey Mooring drove in a run.

Brooks Bartlett scattered three hits and logged 13 strikeouts in a complete-game effort on the mound.

Golf

Gay gets ace

Tommy Gay will remember his most-recent father's day.

The 28-year-old math teacher at Grantham Middle School recorded his first-ever double-eagle while playing at Lane Tree Golf Club. Gay hit a driver, then a 4-iron from 190 yards to the cup on the par-5, No. 14 hole which measures 432 yards.

Playing partners Shane Ricketts and Jay Barber witnessed the feat.
