MOUNT OLIVE -- Alyssa Bradshaw's pinch-hit, RBI single capped a three-run, sixth-inning uprising as Mount Olive College defeated Barton 4-2 in the opener of their Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.

The Dawgs claimed the nightcap 2-1.

It was the league opener for both teams.

In game one, Mount Olive trailed 2-0 and didn't register a hit until Kelly Minshew delivered a two-out, fourth-inning single. After Barton hurler Claire Severt plunked Jessica Velasquez, Minshew scored on Robbin Kennedy's base knock.

The Trojans (10-11-1 overall, 1-1 CC) broke the game open in the sixth. Kat Cahoon, Minshew, Jenny Jackson and Kennedy contributed to the game-clinching rally. Bradshaw's hit scored Kennedy.

Jackson claimed her first mound win in relief of Anna Turvin.

An unearned, fifth-inning run allowed Barton to seize control in the second game. Mount Olive's Kristin Ware (3-4) threw a four-hitter, while Barton's Kim Page yielded two hits.

Trailing 1-0, Cahoon started the Trojans' third-inning rally by legging out a bunt single and advancing to second on a throwing error. Minshew doubled off the left-field wall to score Cahoon.

Page, who logged four strikeouts, held MOC hitless the final four innings.

The Trojans entertain in-state conference rival Lees-McRae today at 3 p.m. The doubleheader was moved up 24 hours due to Friday's weather forecast, which predicts a day-long, cold rain.

Men's basketball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College junior guard Kendrick Easley earned a spot on the 2008-09 Daktronics Division II Southeast Region first-team on the men's basketball scene.

A preseason All-American candidate, Easley grabbed the Conference Carolinas player of the year honors this season. The 6-foot-1 native of Norfolk, Va., averaged 21.2 points an outing and ranked among the nation's top-10 three-point shooters.

One of five players on the Southeast Region squad, Easley is now eligible for All-American honors. That team will be announced later this month.

Easley scored 593 points this season as Mount Olive finished 18-10 overall and grabbed a share of the Conference Carolinas regular-season championship. Easley has 1,542 points in his career.

Women's tennis

PEMBROKE -- Mount Olive College seized three doubles points and stopped in-state rival UNC Pembroke 6-3 in a non-conference, women's tennis match Wednesday afternoon.

Pietra Viana earned a straight-set win at No. 5 singles and teamed with Camila Kurebayashi for a victory at No. 3 doubles. Kurebayashi also triumphed in singles.

Carol Aro emerged victorious in singles and combined with Jessica Souza for a tiebreaking win at No. 1 doubles. Kristen Jones-Sofia Medeiros prevailed at No. 2 doubles.

Mount Olive (3-4 overall) continues its four-match road swing today at Georgia College and State University. The Trojans play at Augusta State (Ga.) on Friday and visit Conference Carolinas foe Limestone (S.C.) University on Saturday.
