Williams ready for challenge as new EW football coach

Bubba Williams walked the hallways during his teaching internship at Eastern Wayne a couple of years ago and noticed talented athletes hovered around every corner.

"I'd like to come back here," Williams thought to himself.

Now, he's got the chance.

An East Carolina graduate, Williams was officially named the new head varsity football coach at Eastern Wayne on Friday morning. He replaces Jeff Price, who resigned after six seasons to take an assistant coach position at North Johnston.

"I'm really excited about the people and thought it was a great opportunity," said Williams, who served as offensive coordinator at New Bern last season. "The students, staff and community ... put all that together and I think there's a shot at turning this program back in the right direction.

"I'm interested in getting things rolling again ... am looking forward to the challenges ahead."

Quality athletes have donned the blue and gold over the years, but inner strife -- within the coaching staff and team -- has led to sub-par seasons on the field. Previous Warrior squads have enjoyed just four winning campaigns since 1990, including one during Price's tenure.

Eastern Wayne hasn't won a postseason contest since 1980 when it competed on the Class 4-A level. The Warriors have logged an 0-6 playoff record since then.

"

One of fifth applicants for the position, Williams brings more than just football knowledge to the program. He's a strength and conditioning coach who has a track background, which he plans to incorporate into the program.

"Speed enhancement and development is big in eastern North Carolina ... a big-time hotbed for speed," said Williams. "You generally don't have the six-foot-seven, 300-pound lineman you have like you do in the western part of the state. I haven't been in touch with any of the players.

"As far as offenses and defenses, you have to match your players with the skills they have and put those philosophies into place. You have to develop talent as you go."

Eastern Wayne finished 5-7 last season after starting 3-1. Injuries plagued the Warriors the entire year, which ended with an opening-round playoff loss at Hertford County.
