Warriors save Best play for last against Beddingfield

Lamar Best made a steal near midcourt with less than 10 seconds to play and scored the game-winning layup as time expired in Eastern Wayne's 62-60 victory over Wilson Beddingfield on Friday evening.

Will White paced the Warriors' offense with 14 points, while Best added 10. Jeniri Cyrus and Colton Butler chipped in nine and seven points, respectively.

Daquan Langston led the Bruins with 15 points.

Eastern Wayne (6-13 overall) evened its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference worksheet at 4-4 heading into Tuesday's road game at Charles B. Aycock.

Chargers cruise

State-ranked Wayne Country Day bolted to a 10-point lead midway through the second quarter and dumped Kerr-Vance 50-28 on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference scene.

Everybody played and scored for the Chargers, who improved to 17-11 overall and 5-1 against CPIC opposition. Floronta Wynn provided 14 points, five rebounds and five assists.

"I knew we were going to be short-handed (tonight)," said second-year WCDS head coach Terry Jones. "I felt like we'd still be OK and I could give some of my role players an opportunity to step up in a different position, and gain some confidence.

"I was pleased with that."

Tim Hobbs (ankle injury) sat on the bench in street clothes. Reco McCarter, who continues to recover from a hand injury, contributed seven points, eight rebounds and four assists. Rashid Williams knocked down nine points and grabbed five boards.

Hil Tanner (two assists) and Josh Gregory (four rebounds) posted five points apiece.

Wayne Country Day welcomes county rival Wayne Christian on Monday.

Dawgs leashed

KENLY -- Princeton trimmed a 27-point, third-quarter deficit to nine, but North Johnston pulled away for a 62-50 victory in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

Andre Nixon led the Bulldawgs with 13 points, while point guard David Gurganus chipped in 12. T.J. Wilson supplied 11 points. Matt Williamson had eight points and nine rebounds.

Justin Price scored 22 points for the Panthers.

Princeton (9-13 overall, 3-5 Carolina) plays host to Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

Falcons hunted

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock fell short in its quest for a second Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory with a 51-48 loss at Wilson Hunt.

Jonathan Williams led the Golden Falcons with 18 points and Tyheim Pitt added nine. Molonza Hayes and Isaac Ryals had six points apiece.

Josh Williams and Ahmad Young each scored 12 points for the Warriors.

C.B. Aycock (12-10 overall, 1-7 ECC) welcomes Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Gators down Eagles

Kenneth Freeman scored 12 points and Melvin DeVeaux added 11 points as Spring Creek picked up a 52-44 win at Carolina 1-A Conference foe Rosewood on Friday night.

Courtland Jones and Anthony Green each contributed eight points for the Gators.

Jacquez Raynor led the Eagles (4-14, 1-6 Carolina) with 15 points, Cody Harris had 12 and James Harris pitched in eight. Rosewood shot just 13-for-31 effort from the free throw line.

The Eagles visit North Duplin on Tuesday, while Spring Creek (5-3, 6-12) travels to North Johnston.

Chargers blast Rebels

AYDEN -- North Duplin fell 67-31 at Ayden Grifton in Carolina 1-A Conference action on Friday.

James Kornegay paced the Rebels with nine points, while Xavier Lee added eight.

North Duplin (0-16 overall, 0-8 Carolina) plays host to Rosewood on Tuesday.

WCS stumbles

WILSON -- Wilson Christian placed four different players in double figures and defeated Wayne Christian 66-40 on Friday night.

Luke Howell scored 13 points and had rebounds for the Eagles (7-12 overall) and Bradley Yelverton had nine points. Justin Brathwaite added six points.

Wayne Christian visits Wayne Country Day on Monday.

Girls' basketball

Cougars persevere

LaGRANGE -- Block it all out and just keep playing.

Goldsboro overcame turnover issues, foul trouble and some difficult calls to earn a 67-51 victory on Friday evening at North Lenoir.

The Cougars struggled to take care of the basketball and coughed it up 18 times in the first three quarters. Starting center Millicent Kornegay got whistled for two fouls before the first quarter expired.

Goldsboro (14-7, 6-1 EPC) shook off its early woes and scored eight unanswered points to open the fourth quarter. That gave the Cougars a commanding 57-41 lead.

"We had to play through adversity for four quarters," said third-year Cougars head coach Brandy Smith. "I think we were able to continue making plays because we didn't let fouls, or turnovers or calls whether they went against us or not to affect what we were doing.

"We had a game plan and we had to stick to our game plan regardless of what happened."

Goldsboro's entire starting lineup scored in double figures led by Zeara McDuffie's 15 points and 11 rebounds. Akeyanna Whitlor added 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Millicent Kornegay had 11 points. Ki'Ana Williams contributed 10 points.

"We had equal contributions and we didn't have one girl try to do her own thing, but we got everybody involved and we didn't lose anything when we had to sub in," said Smith. I think we're playing our best basketball. We have a goal and we want to win the conference outright this year."

Jordan Hudson scored 14 points for the Hawks and Enjoli Mason had 11.

The Cougars entertain Greene Central on Tuesday while North Lenoir (14-6, 3-4) travels to Tarboro.

Saints survive

KINSTON -- Southern Wayne overcame an early deficit and held off a late rally to defeat Eastern Carolina 3-A conference foe Kinston 44-41 on Friday night.

The Vikings controlled the paint as they raced out to a 16-10 lead in the first eight minutes.

Southern Wayne used stingy defense to pull even at the half.

Lynnesha Leonard ignited the Saints' offense in the second half with multiple fast-break buckets.

On the night, Danielle Carlton paced the Saints' attack with 11 points. Leonard and Octavia Lee each added 10 points.

Kinston (4-13, 3-5 ECC) was led by Cookie Wingfield's 11-point night. Carolina DeBruhl finished with nine points.

Southern Wayne (9-13, 3-5) travels to Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Shooting plagues CBA

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock struggled to generate offense in a 49-24 loss at Wilson Hunt on Friday evening.

The Golden Falcons shot 4 for 30 from the floor in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference game. Camille Williams led Aycock (4-18 overall, 1-7 ECC) with seven points.

Rams stumble

SNOW HILL -- North Pitt handed Greene Central a 51-43 setback in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Friday evening.

Tia Jones and Shanice Pettaway each scored 13 points for the Rams. Brittany Jones added eight points and nine rebounds.

Greene Central (9-12 overall, 3-4 EPC) travels to Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Rebels defeated

AYDEN -- North Duplin suffered a 50-29 loss at Ayden-Grifton on Friday evening.

Tearra Ammons led the Rebels with 11 points. Angelica Favela added eight.

North Duplin (0-16 overall, 0-8 Carolina) entertains Rosewood on Tuesday.

Eagles split pair

WILSON -- Wayne Christian sliced a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to four points, but got no closer in a 45-38, non-conference loss at Wilson Christian on Friday evening.

Hanna Kaler poured in 22 points for the Eagles and pulled down 14 rebounds. Kaitlyn Kosuda added seven points and eight rebounds.

Wayne Christian used a balanced scoring effort to pick up a 58-45 win over Cresset Christian on Thursday evening.

Kaler scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Kosuda provided 10 points and 11 rebounds. Devan Isenhower added eight points and eight boards, Carly Hightower had eight points and five rebounds and Julia Oden pitched in eight points and eight boards.

The Eagles (13-5 overall) visit Wayne Country Day on Tuesday.

RW escapes

Rosewood escaped with a 44-43 win over Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek on Friday evening.

Christina Bruton led the Eagles with 13 points, while teammate Shantal Johnson added 11.

Richelle Butler scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Gators, who lost their third consecutive game. Shaquita Brooks scored nine points.

Rosewood (4-15 overall, 2-6 Carolina) travels to North Duplin on Tuesday, while Spring Creek (3-11, 3-5) visits Ayden-Grifton.

JV sports

* Girls' basketball: Wilson Hunt 34, C.B. Aycock 33 -- Elizabeth Fortner scored nine points and Takesha Newsome added six for Aycock. The Golden Falcons (10-6, 4-4 Eastern Carolina Conference) entertain Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

* Girls' basketball: Wilson Christian 41, Wayne Christian 26 -- Brooke Barfield scored a game-high 19 points for the Eagles and Courtney Barrow added six rebounds.

* Girls' basketball: Kerr-Vance 20, Wayne Country Day 14 -- Sarah Best led the Chargers with 11 points. Wayne Country Day plays host to Wayne Christian on Monday.

* Boys' basketball: Wilson Christian 44, Wayne Christian 36 -- Chase King led the Eagles with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Anthony Mulligan added 10 points and six rebounds and Jordan Crouthamel had eight points. Wayne Christian (10-7, 6-3 CCC) visits Johnston Christian on Monday with second place in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference on the line.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 41, Johnston Christian 27 -- Gregory Johnson led the Eagles with 11 points and nine rebouns and Baron Wise added 10 points and seven boards. Wayne Christian advanced to the finals of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference middle school tournament on Tuesday evening.

* Boys' basketball: Kerr-Vance 37, Wayne Country Day 25 -- Zach Syverson emerged the Chargers' top scorer 13 points. Luke Bryan added 10 points, while Zack Brewer-Kirby contributed two points. Wayne Country Day (10-4 overall) fell to 4-2 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play. The Chargers entertain Wayne Christian on Monday.

* Boys' basketball: Norwayne 39, Rosewood 37 -- Vincent Sapp lead Norwayne with 13 points and Michael Williams contributed 11. Norwayne (7-7, 3-1 Division I) finished the season tied for second place in the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference.

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 28, Rosewood 13 -- Madison Mercer scored seven points for Norwayne and Hannah Pearson added six. Holly Heath and Logan Beal each had four for Rosewood. Norwayne (12-2 overall) concluded the season tied for first in Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I play at 4-2. Rosewood (8-6) ended up a perfect 8-0 against WCMSAC Division II competition.
