PIKEVILLE -- The Charles B. Aycock wrestling team concluded regular-season action with a 44-25 romp over county rival Southern Wayne on Wednesday evening.
The Golden Falcons (22-7 overall) ended up 2-2 against Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opposition this season. Their dual-team playoff fate depends either on today's Southern Wayne-Beddingfield match or Saturday's season-ending conference tournament.
If the Saints win, Aycock receives the No. 2 seed based on a head-to-head tiebreaker with Eastern Wayne. If the Bruins win, they create a three-way tie for second place in the five-team league. The highest-finishing team in the tournament would grab the No. 2 spot.
Aycock is also eligible for a wild-card entry based on winning percentage.
Against the Saints, the Golden Falcons triumphed in nine of 13 contested matches and forfeited at 112 pounds.
Freshman David Romo, who suffered an injury during football season, posted a third-period pin against Southern Wayne freshman Ryan Gross. It was Gross' second loss in 21 outings this season.
Also picking up wins for Aycock were senior Bryan Diorio, heavyweight Elvin James Jr., Justin Farrell, senior Brandon Bailey, Statton Paris, Kaleb Robinson, senior Nick Redding and Brandon Thomas.
Matt Sparks, Miles Bradshaw, Jamison Dove, Ethan Brogden and Dustin Richards scratched in the win column for Southern Wayne.
"I can't think of a better way to end the regular season," said second-year Aycock head coach Mark Bass. "We finished strong. It's about taking another step forward every time we go onto the mat and they've really grown a lot."
