Rosewood's Britt among top 75 in 1-A state meet

CLEMMONS -- Rosewood's Nick Britt ended up 74th overall in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A men's cross country championships contested Saturday at Tanglewood Park.

Britt, the Carolina Conference champion, ran the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 47.01 seconds.

Spring Creek, which won the Mideast Regional, wound up 15th in team competition. Drew Pierce ran the Gators' fastest time in 20:20.8 and took 94th overall among nearly 140 competitors. Teammate John Kearney placed 103rd in 20:50.38.

Completing the Gators' scoring was Corey Howell (20:58.78), Andrew Swedenburg (21:09.34) and Ken Freeman (22:16.41). Sebastian Jackson and Starling Krentz also participated, but did not factor into the team score.

Ethan Anderson and (20:09.72) and Adam Peedin (21:12.09) represented Princeton.

On the girls' side, Princeton senior Olivia Booker claimed 63rd overall in 23:51.03. Fellow seniors Meagan Hewitt (24:12.94) and Jill Whitley (24:22.55) placed 67th and 70th, while junior Brittany Rainbow took 75th. Hattie Dougherty crossed the line in 78th.

Anna Dougherty and Logan Keene also competed for the Dawgs.

Rosewood senior Brittnay Duffley was 119th.

Hayesville claimed the men's state championship with a 50-63 decision over Gray Stone Day. Bishop McGuinness seized the women's title due to having the sixth-highest finisher compared to Hayesville. Both teams had 84 points.

Youth soccer

* Goldsboro Sting 3, Johnston Crusaders 0 -- Adrian Thompson, Bryan Johnson and Mitchell Kaspar each scored for the Sting and Johnson added an assist. The Sting completed its fall season at 3-5-1 and will begin its spring season in February.
