ATLANTIC BEACH -- Eastern Wayne swept the singles matches and cruised past West Carteret 6-0 on the Island Beach Racquet Club tennis courts Tuesday afternoon.

The state-ranked Warriors (15-1 overall) advanced to a third-round meeting against county archrival Charles B. Aycock in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A dual-team playoffs. The teams meet next Tuesday at Herman Park.

Third-seeded Mollie Musgrave and fourth-seeded Elizabeth Borden each posted a shutout over their respective opponent. Fifth-seeded Kelsi Yates rallied from a four-game, second-set deficit to win 6-0, 6-4.

Regional qualifier Miller Delbridge, Lindsey Frederick and top-seeded Danielle Daniel each earned a straight-set singles win. Delbridge trailed early in the second set before winning four straight games to take control in a 6-0, 6-2 decision over the Patriots' Anna Powell.

Eastern Wayne climbed back into the 10th spot in the latest N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association poll released Tuesday.

Aycock triumphs

JACKSONVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock advanced to the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs with a 5-1 victory over White Oak on Tuesday.

Ashley Howell, Kristen Fischer, Hollie Baker, Abbey Strickland and Nicole Kessler each recorded a singles win for Aycock.

Volleyball

Hawks upended

LaGRANGE -- It only took one loss.

Previously unbeaten North Lenoir saw its season come to a close with a 17-25, 20-25, 16-25 home loss to Cedar Ridge on Tuesday in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs.

Kristen Davenport had six kills, Marissa Lanier added five kills and Courtney Hill provided six kills and two blocks.

Felisha Johnson finished with four kills and a block and Jordan Hudson chipped in 22 assists.

The Hawks finished the season 24-1 overall.

Faith defeated

LEXINGTON -- Faith Christian suffered a season-ending 18-25, 23-25, 14-25 loss at Sheets Christian in the quarterfinals of the N.C. Christian Schools Athletic Association tournament on Tuesday.

Kaitlyn Floars contributed six kills, five digs and two blocks and Rebecca Smith pitched in eight assists. Jennifer Christopher added four assists and Alyssa Hill had four digs, three kills and three assists.

The Conquerors ended the year with an 11-5 record.

Chargers honored

Wayne Country Day's Brooke Norris, Bridgette Briggs, Jessica Lewis and Kim Martel were each named to the Coastal Plains Independent all-conference team. Norris was also named co-conference player of the year.

The Chargers begin N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association quarterfinal play at 2 p.m. at Wayne Country Day on Friday against Cresset Christian.

Soccer

Gators roll

GRIFTON -- Rangel Ricardo and Leonel Ramirez tallied two goals apiece as state-ranked Spring Creek hammered Ayden-Grifton 8-1 in a Carolina 1-A Conference match Monday afternoon.

The Gators (11-0-2 overall, 4-0-1 Carolina) clinched at least a share of the regular-season title, the program's second in school history. A victory today over county rival Rosewood assures Spring Creek of the outright championship.

Antonio Avila, Jose Vasquez, Donte Ortiz and Alphonso Carachure each provided one goal.

Golf

Walnut Creek LGA

Nancy Satterfield emerged the play-of-the-day winner during weekly tournament play on the Walnut Creek Country Club links.

Novella Zambelli claimed low gross. Linda Cannon and Betty Holloway seized low net and low putts, respectively.

Lane Tree LGA

Betty Jean Gurley captured the game-of-the-week and low net honors during weekly action contested at Lane Tree Golf Club.

Linda Watson and Libby Newsome shared low putts.
