WILSON -- Wilson Beddingfield scored 14 points in both the second and third quarters to remain unbeaten and pull away from Southern Wayne for a 40-21, Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference victory on Friday evening.

James Jones led the Saints (1-7 overall, 0-2 ECC) with 206 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries.

"I just thought the offensive line blocked very well," said Southern Wayne head coach Bob Warren. "The blocking on the offensive line was much improved. James is a very good runner, but we all know we've got to get him through line of scrimmage for him to be effective."

The Bruins (8-0, 2-0) went on top on Lance Price's 30-yard touchdown pass to Jumal Rolle. The Saints answered with Jordan Williams' 23-yard strike to Eric Long. Monteith Lucas' 8-yard score put Hunt back in front late in the first quarter.

Jones scored from a yard out midway though the second quarter but Beddingfield got touchdown runs from Byron Anderson and Marcus Ruffin before halftime.

Jones found the end zone once more in the second half but the Bruins padded their lead with two third quarter scores from Ruffin.

"I thought we made improvement last night," said Warren. "That's our goal is to try to keep improving."

Eagles grounded

KENLY -- Rosewood's offense never got on track and the Eagles struggled to slow down North Johnston in a 42-6, Carolina 1-A Conference loss on Friday evening.

The Panthers (3-5 overall, 2-0) racked up 370 yards on the ground and led 28-0 at halftime. Grey Bruton scored on a 58-yard run and North Johnston added an interception return for a touchdown. The Panthers had four scores of 55 yards or more.

"Defensively, it was more competitive than what the score would show," said Eagles head coach Robert Britt. "We played well at times defensively. Offensively, North Johnston did a good job of hemming up everything we tried to do.

"I feel like the boys improved (Friday) night from where we've been the last couple of weeks and hopefully that gives us some confidence going against Spring Creek next week."

Joshua Holmes scored Rosewood's lone touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Gators defeated

AYDEN -- Perhaps the lone bright spot was a late touchdown.

Spring Creek allowed 21 first-quarter points and fell 55-8 to Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Friday evening.

The Chargers (5-3 overall, 2-0 Carolina 1-A) led 41-0 at the half. The Gators' only score came on late touchdown pass from Nick Hatem to Ricky Brayboy.

Spring Creek (0-8, 0-2) plays host to Rosewood next Friday.
