PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock dominated from start to finish as it bested Kinston 25-13, 25-19, 25-11 in the first round of the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference volleyball tournament on Monday.
Beth Carter led the Golden Falcons with eight kills. Brittany Jordan and Camille Williams each chipped in seven kills. Anna Sullivan led Aycock defensively with 10 digs.
The Golden Falcons (9-8 overall) travel to Wilson Beddingfield today. First serve is 6 p.m.
Eagles down Rebels
Rosewood kept its Carolina 1-A Conference tournament title hopes alive with a convincing 25-7, 25-11, 25-20 win over North Duplin on Monday.
Paige Babb paced the Eagle offense with 16 assists, while teammate Taylor Johnson delivered eight kills. Jennifer Hall contirbuted four service aces.
The Rebels were led by Sam Cates' five aces and two kills. Tearra Ammons also added two kills in the loss.
North Duplin finished the season 5-10 overall.
Rosewood (8-10) faces archrival Princeton in semifinal-round play today at North Johnston.
Gators roll
Spring Creek made short work of Ayden-Grifton 25-20, 25-15, 25-19 in the opening round of the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament on Monday.
Kristin Smith continued her strong front line play with 22 kills and three blocks. Shaquita Brooks added nine kills and seven blocks. Randi Oxendine dished out 29 assists.
The Gators travel to top-seeded North Johnston today.
Cougars tumble
Goldsboro completed its season with an opening-round loss in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference tournament on Monday. The Cougars fell to North Pitt 25-7, 25-15, 25-14.
"I was really pleased with how much this team improved over the course of the season," said head coach T.J. Lancaster. "The girls all worked hard to get better, and that should help us next year."
The match was the final showcase for seniors Millicent Kornegay, Dianna Lewis, Laquita Streeter and Jerica Cole.
Middle schools
* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Brogden 25-10, 25-15, 25-11 -- Logan Tyalor led the Cobras with nine points on serve. Taylor Gray added eight additional points on serve. Norwayne improved to 10-0 overall.
* Volleyball: Dillard d. Grantham 25-22, 25-13, 22-25, 21-25, 15-4 -- Jane Hamilton tallied five kills as Dillard improved to 6-6 on the season. Victoria McKenzie contributed 18 points on serve.
* Volleyball: Eastern Wayne d. Rosewood 25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17 -- Amanda Beckert delivered 10 aces and four kills for the Eagles. Holly Heath added nine aces. Rosewood fell to 7-2 on the season.
